For the past several months we've been telling you about an effort to create loft apartments in Flint's central business district.

This morning, organizers and developers held a news conference to bring everyone up to date.

Work has begun on the exterior of the bank building at Saginaw and First Street in downtown Flint.

Developers plan to fully restore the building to its original appearance including a cornice, radius-top windows, terra cotta walls and columns. "It's gonna be a real showpiece downtown. There's no doubt," said Scott Whipple, of Uptown Development Corp.

Workers have been gutting much of the interior of the seven-story building. The upper levels will be occupied by 16 loft apartments, which will be created on the third through seventh floors.

One and two bedroom apartments will range in size from 800 to 1,300 square feet. "We're trying to give it, kind of an art gallery appearance. And really, the main feature in the apartments are all these windows that you see here and the spectacular views looking out," Whipple said.

Whipple expects people to begin moving in sometime in May of next year.

There is a possibility a supermarket could move into a vacant building on the other side of First Street.

Other plans exist that would create eight loft apartments in the building next to the Republic Bank Building. "This is what the community is all about-collaboration, cooperation and partnerships," said Tim Herman, from Uptown Development Corp.

It's all part of an effort to breathe new life into downtown Flint.
