Flint Councilman Eric Mays talks to police after being forced to leave meeting

Flint Councilman Eric Mays talks to police, including Chief James Tolbert, after having been forced to leave a City Council meeting Wednesday, July 10.

FLINT, MI -- Police escorted Councilman Eric Mays out of a City Hall meeting Wednesday, July 8, after he refused to stop speaking.

Mays, who is running for mayor, left the meeting with a police officer by his side but was not arrested, Chief James Tolbert said.

Citizen confronts Flint Councilman Eric Mays

A citizen confronts Flint Councilman Eric Mays outside the meeting he was forced to leave Wednesday, July 8.

Councilwoman Monica Galloway, chairwoman of the council's finance committee, told Mays he was being disorderly and asked police to remove him.

"Your time is over. You're out of order. Your time is up," Galloway told Mays, who has been threatened with removal at several previous council meetings for refusing to yield the floor.

Mays left on his own but with an officer at his shoulder. His colleagues stopped their business until the officer escorted him from the room where the meeting was taking place.

"I'll be removed. ... I'm not afraid of you," Mays told Galloway before the police officer approached him at the meeting table.

When Mays continued to speak, airing his grievances against other council members, they complained they couldn't do their business with him in the room.

Council President Josh Freeman asked the police officer, "Can you please get him out of the meeting?"

The officer moved May's chair away from the council table and took the councilman by the arm, leading him from the room.

In the hallway outside, Mays confronted Freeman about his role in having him removed and told a resident who complained about his behavior that she was "going after black folks."

Mays said later that the situation escalated because Galloway refused to ask other council members if they would support his appeal of her decision that he was being disorderly.

Before the police were called, the councilman was complaining about the city's failure to keep grass and weeds cut in public rights of way and private properties.

When the first-term councilman continued to speak after warnings from Galloway to finish, she read a statement telling Mays he was interfering with the council's business and "unreasonably causing a disturbance."

"I respect Councilman Mays, but there comes a point ... when we are not moving the city forward. You have to draw that line," Galloway said after the meeting.

My female African American friend wants t know why Tolbert left Mays in the building. She reminds me about Tony Palladino being removed from the building for allegedly being disruptive.

Kudos to Galloway for being prepared to deal with Mays!

Flint Councilman Eric Mays claims Monday, July 8, during a committee of the whole meeting that he was discriminated against when he was removed from a July 8 committee meeting.

FLINT, MI -- Flint City Councilman Eric Mays demanded a public apology and threatened a lawsuit over his claims that council members "unlawfully conspired" to discriminate against him and his 1st Ward constituents when he was removed from a committee meeting.

Mays made the allegations Monday, July 13, during a committee of the whole meeting over his removal from a Wednesday, July 8, financial committee meeting.

The committee of the whole meeting began with a statement from Mays alleging that Council President Josh Freeman and Financial Committee Chairwoman Monica Galloway conspired against Mays when Galloway ordered him removed from the July 8 committee meeting.

Mays, who is running for mayor, left the July 8 meeting with a police officer by his side after Galloway told Mays he was being disorderly and asked police to remove him.

"Your time is over. You're out of order. Your time is up," Galloway told Mays, who has been threatened with removal at several previous council meetings for refusing to yield the floor.

Flint police Chief James Tolbert said Mays was not arrested. But Mays, during his statement Monday, claimed he was "technically arrested" during the meeting. Mays added that he was not allowed to return to council chambers for the public safety committee meeting.

Mays was given two minutes to address fellow council members during Monday's committee of the whole meeting regarding his allegations. He was cut off by Freeman as his statement ran long.

Galloway, at the end of the meeting, asked Freeman to allow Mays to continue his statement.

"If I'm not going to get arrested, I'll continue my statement," Mays said.

Mays read from a damage claim form that he filed with the city, which outlined his allegations.

"Councilman Mays alleges that the reason that President Josh Freeman 'openly stated' on the record that he 'discriminates' against Councilman Mays based on 'ward' and 'sex' is because he did not realize all the 'legally' protected catagories (sic) as he attempted to profer (sic) a 'pretext' for race discrimination," the damage claim alleges.

Freeman declined to comment on Mays' allegations and Galloway declined to respond to his statement.

Mays demanded a public apology as part of the complaint. He also demanded that grass be cut on city-owned properties, which was being discussed at the time of his removal from the July 8 meeting, and that $20,000 be put into a special account for blight removal for the First Ward.

If the board does not settle his claims before the two weeks leading up to the city's mayoral primary election, Mays said he would file the allegations as part of a lawsuit in Genesee Circuit Court.

"Subpoenas will fly," Mays said.

Flint Councilman Eric Mays cutoff as he threatens discrimination lawsuit against city

Flint Council President Josh Freeman cuts off councilman Eric Mays as mays threatens a discrimination lawsuit against the city over his removal from a July 8 committee meeting.

FLINT, MI -- A Flint city councilman claims a warrant has been issued for his arrest after he was removed by police from a July 8 committee meeting.

Councilman Eric Mays claimed Flint police Chief James Tolbert told him during a Monday, July 13, phone call that a misdemeanor warrant for disorderly conduct was issued against him.

"He asked if I would turn myself in," Mays said.

Tolbert declined to comment, adding that he would not address any warrant until a suspect is arraigned.

Mays, who is running for election to mayor, claimed the warrant stemmed from his removal from a Wednesday, July 8, financial committee meeting after committee Chairwoman Monica Galloway claimed he was disorderly. He left the meeting with a police officer by his side.

"Your time is over. You're out of order. Your time is up," Galloway told Mays, who has been threatened with removal at several previous council meetings for refusing to yield the floor.

Mays claimed he was notified of the warrant during a phone call he received from Tolbert minutes after a Monday committee of the whole meeting where he threatened a discrimination lawsuit against the city.

The committee of the whole meeting began with Mays reading from a damage claim form that he filed with the city, which outlined his allegations.

Mays claimed he was cut off and removed from the July 8 meeting as part of an ongoing "unlawful conspiracy" against him and his 1st Ward constituents.

Mays demanded a public apology as part of the complaint. He also demanded that overgrown grass be cut on properties around the city, which was being discussed at the time of his removal from the July 8 meeting, and $20,000 be put into a special account for blight removal for the 1st Ward.

He threatened a civil suit against the city if the council does not settle his complaint at least two weeks before the city's mayoral primary.
