The director of the Flint Civil Service Commission plans to sue the city to get her job back, but she'll be using the city's money to do it.
The civil service office closed Jan. 20 after it ran out funding. But Director Tracy Collier Nix says the Civil Service Commission has now given her the go ahead to get a lawyer to force funding for her office.
After officially closing down last Friday officially, the civil service office has opened its doors temporarily. Collier Nix is volunteering her time 30 to 35 hours a week.
"When I get passionate about something, I dig in my heels because it's the right thing to do," she said.
But she just received a letter that all her work may be for naught, the personnel department has suspended the completion of any open case.
Still, Collier Nix is pushing forward. She is writing a letter to Flint's city attorney, asking for the funds to pay for a lawyer to fight for her job back.
According to past practices and the city charter, she has every right.
The Flint Civil Service Commission is mandated by the charter and it says the city must provide appropriate funds to commission so it can conduct its business.
It would only cost the city $50,000 to run the civil service department, but the Flint City Council and city are at a stalemate on how to provide those funds.
"It's conceivable we could approach thousands of dollars in legal fees," Collier Nix said.
That would be a legal battle that could be more expensive than running the civil service department. But at this point, the council and mayor's office can't even decide who to meet with to resolve the issue.
The city attorney has three days to respond to the letter from the civil service director.
