Flint emergency manager approves tax break for American SpiralWeld plant

FLINT, MI -- The company that's manufacturing steel pipe for the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline from Lake Huron to Flint is getting a tax break for making the pipe here.

Emergency manager Darnell Earley signed a resolution April 23 to grant a 50 percent real and personal property reduction to American SpiralWeld Pipe Co., which is building a new manufacturing plant on East Marengo Avenue, on part of the old Buick City complex.

Earley's resolution comes after an April public hearing on the Industrial Facilities Exemption Certificate for the plant, which a city staff review says represents a $14.2 million investment and 40 to 50 jobs.

The Flint Planning Commission approved plans in February for a pre-engineered, metal-sided, 180,000-square-foot manufacturing plant for the company, which is a subsidiary of Alabama-based American Cast Iron Pipe Co.

Patrick Hook, vice president of operations for American SpiralWeld, said site work has begun in Flint and some contractors are expected to begin work on site next week.

The company still plans to have the plant in operation in December, Hook said.

An Industrial Facilities Exemption Certificate will allow the company to pay taxes based on 50 percent of the calculated true cash value of the potential new facility -- a 50 percent tax break that will be in effect for 12 years.

In March, Earley had issued a separate resolution, establishing an industrial development district on the American property and clearing the way for the tax break.

FLINT, MI -- A vice president of American SpiralWeld Pipe Co. says the company is still looking to hire employees for a new manufacturing plant here.

Patrick Hook, vice president of operations for American, said the company is looking for skilled workers, particularly in the areas of welding, machine operations and maintenance.

Hourly jobs typically pay a starting wage of $17 to $22 an hour, company officials have said, and hiring is being coordinated by Genesee/Shiawassee Michigan Works!

American is manufacturing steel pipe for the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline from Lake Huron to Flint, and Hook said that work has started at the factory site, located on East Marengo Avenue at the old Buick City complex.

Documents filed with the city say the development represents a $14.2 million investment and 40 to 50 jobs.

Hook said the company's pre-engineered, metal-sided, 180,000-square-foot manufacturing plant has been ordered and contractors are expected to start working on the site this week.

"We've started to make a few hires," the vice president said. "We're using Michigan Works to help with the hiring process."

To apply for a position, applicants should visit Pure Michigan Talent Connect (http://www.mitalent.org/)

Mike killbreath has me intrigued. Has the Shrine embezzlement case finally resolved. What about the Mann Act violations Singelis alleged against specific Shriners, including Curtis and Smiley? Maybe the allegations of fraud swirling around about Eason and Smith Village? More ICE results on child porn? There are so many possibilities, I guess we just have to listen and see.

FLINT, MI -- American SpiralWeld Pipe Co. has updated its application process, giving job seekers an easy way to find job openings at its new plant in the city.

American has started construction on the plant site at the old Buick City complex on the city's north side and plans to create more than 40 jobs with starting wages at $17 to $22 an hour.

An email from Genesee/Shiawassee Michigan Works! says five positions at American are currently listed on the Web site for Michigan Talent Connect, including shipping administrator, yard tech & equipment operator, team leader --shipping/yard, production manager -- spiral mill, and maintenance manager.

More information on those position are posted at the Michigan Talent Web site. Applicants can get the postings by clicking on the "jobseeker" tab on the Web site and entering area code 48505 or by searching for one of the positions by entering the job title in the search field.

American is manufacturing steel pipe for the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline from Lake Huron to Flint, and has started work on its factory site, located on East Marengo Avenue at the old Buick City complex.

Documents filed with the city say the development represents a $14.2 million investment and 40 to 50 jobs.

An American official had told MLive-The Flint Journal about job openings with the company earlier this month but the new process for finding available positions was not available at that time.

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — Suniva Inc. has posted more job openings for its new Saginaw Township factory, and the deadline to apply is approaching.

The Norcross, Georgia-based company, a manufacturer of high-efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells and modules, recently announced plans to open a new facility at 2650 Schust, formerly a Sears Warehouse, in Saginaw Township.

An online search for Suniva jobs in Saginaw yielded the following results — a total of 69 openings — as of Monday, Aug. 4:
•Engineering Technician (two openings)
•Facilities and Safety Engineer/Equipment Engineering Manager (one opening)
•Human Resources Specialist (one opening)
•IT MES Automation Engineer (one opening)
•Maintenance Technician (six openings)
•Process Engineer (one opening)
•Shift Supervisor (three openings)
•Solar Module Operators (50 openings)
•Warehouse Clerk (three openings)
•Warehouse Supervisor (one opening)

Marc Rogovin, vice president and chief procurement officer for Suniva, said these are full-time jobs with benefits.

As of last week, the company had received about 400 resumes, he said.

Rogovin said this is only the initial phase of hiring, and Suniva will be in a continuous hiring mode.

"We're going to be at 350 jobs within the three-year period," he said.

Job seekers can search for job postings, learn more about these positions and apply online at www.suniva.com.

According to a Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! news release, the deadline to apply for all positions is 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11.

Candidates also may apply online via www.mitalent.org, or at any of the Michigan Works locations in Saginaw, Bay City or Midland.

Rogovin said interviews are to take place the week of Monday, Aug. 18.

Why Saginaw County?

Suniva plans to create a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Saginaw Township, investing up to $12.5 million and creating 350 jobs over the next three years.

Greg LaMarr, communications manager for Saginaw Future Inc., said the company will make and assemble solar modules at the former Sears Warehouse, located near Fashion Square Mall.

Rogovin said the company had plans to to build a ground-up facility in Thomas Township a few years ago, but those plans did not materialize.

We're looking for good people that want a career. - Marc Rogovin, Suniva

Rogovin said Suniva chose Saginaw County, in part, because of its geographic location, but also for its workforce.

"Michigan has had a long history of having high-quality manufacturing talent," he said.

Rogovin said Suniva looks for different things in applicants depending upon the job.

For operators, for instance, Suniva looks for a high school diploma, basic math and computer skills, ability to read and write in English, ability to operate equipment and to lift 50 pounds.

"We're just looking for people that want to work," Rogovin said. "...We're looking for good people that want a career."

Saginaw Township Supervisor Tim Braun says this influx of jobs is uplifting for the township and the greater Saginaw area.

"Every time a new company comes in or a company expands people get very excited about it, and it gives them hope that things are turning," Braun said.

Now hiring: Burton looks to fill 6 new police officer jobs

Roberto Acosta | racosta1@mlive.com By Roberto Acosta | racosta1@mlive.com
on August 12, 2014 at 12:00 PM, updated August 12, 2014 at 12:38 PM

BURTON, MI --The city is looking to interview for six new police officer jobs, bolstering the department's ranks to 42 officers.

Interviews are set to take place with six potential Burton police officer candidates.

"I'm doing interviews next Wednesday," said Burton police Chief Tom Osterholzer, who is scheduled to be joined Aug. 13 by Mayor Paula Zelenko and personnel director Sue Warren during the interviews.

"Our plan is most definitely to hire six," he said, adding if hired the candidates may come in three at a time, but he said that could change in the coming days.

Osterholzer said he would like to get them hired and in training "as quickly as possible."

The salaries and benefits for those potential hires amounting to roughly $450,000 will come from the city's general fund, on top of more than $3 million coming in from a 6.5 mill, 20-year millage passed by voters in November 2013.

Councilman Vaughn Smith, who also serves as finance chair for the city, said the additional dollars have been set aside in the 2014-15 budget.

"We're trying to create a thin blue line to help keep the Burton area and business community safe, so they can stop crime (before it happens)," he said. "You want to make sure you don't invite it in either."

The department currently has 36 officers, including seven officers hired since the millage passed. The city, however, is still below the national average of more than two officers per 1,000 residents, according to FBI statistics.

The training process is an intensive one, with candidates assigned a field training officer and going through policy and procedures during their first week that includes computer training, being outfitted with a uniform, learning about the police vehicles, qualified at the gun range and other items.

Over the course of the next three months, trainees are paired with an officer on each shift learning the ins and out of the day-to-day work on the job, including learning the geography of the city.

If everything goes well during that period, Osterholzer said they will return to their original training officer for two weeks and enter a "shadow scene" in which a plain clothes officer will follow the trainee and only step in if something is done incorrectly or a dangerous situation were to arise.

Patrick McGreevy, a retired Michigan State Police lieutenant who served as the instructor and coordinator for the field training officer course, now does training across the state for DeWolf and Associates.

"It's a 40-hour training school," he said, with officers learning about the history of FTO programs, role of the training officer, what their functions are and how the structure for evaluation works.

Prior to the early 1970s, McGreevy said most departments did not take part in a field training officer program.

He credited the model with getting officers "up to speed faster, because it's a very structured, rigorous program" and also figuring out those who might not be cut out for the job or training which he said is vital to identify.

"That responsibility is very challenging. They can get into a very, very dangerous, fast-moving situation that can result in extreme violence." McGreevy said.

Meijer looks to hire 4,800 employees in Michigan

Posted: Sep 03, 2014 6:16 PM EDT

Updated: Sep 03, 2014 6:31 PM EDT

By Caresse Jackman - email

BURTON (WJRT) - (09/03/14) - Meijer is looking to hire 4,800 new team members statewide.

The retailer made the announcement on Wednesday.

Meijer says it needs more people to run its new stores and get ready for the holidays.

This is definitely good news for the company and people looking for work. Meijer says they're looking to hire nearly as 10,000 people across the mid west.

As with any retail company, holidays are always a busy time in retail, but leaders tell us they're hoping these seasonal roles will turn into part time and full time positions for those who want to make a career at Meijer.

We spoke to a Meijer representative on Wednesday. He told us residents in our area looking for opportunities will definitely benefit from this.

"If you look at the Flint, Saginaw, Bay City market, I mean, we're look at hiring as many as 500 people at the 10 stores in that area. We have six stores around Flint and another four around Saginaw and Bay City, so we have a need up there for a lot of new team members," said Frank Guglielmi, senior director of communication.

Leaders say the openings should be posted within the next few weeks.
