Hey Friends,

Don Pfeiffer is hosting a fundraiser for his campaign on Wednesday night from 5 pm until 7 pm.

He wants to be chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, and I want all my friends to know I am impressed how Don Pfeiffer is a young man with passion to make our community the best place on earth to work, live and play!

Pfeiffer's opponent has been a commissioner for 17 years after serving 26 years on the Flint City Council. It's my opinion that Democrat John Northrup's 43 years in office has been long enough. If you like the direction our community is headed, don't support Don Pfeiffer with a small contribution to help get his message to residents in his district, which includes most of Flint Township and part of the City of Flint. If you can't make it to Wednesday's event, please mail a check to Don Pfeiffer at the address on the attached flyer. Or again, if you like how things are going, don't contribute and your failure to get involved will help politicians like John Northrup keep leading us toward self destruction in this community I so dearly love.

Wednesday's fundraiser event is at Foutch's Strike Zone, a new facility operated by my friends Roger Foutch and Dave Dohrman, who are part of a mission by the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce to revive our once proud baseball tradition in this community. Foutch's Strike Zone is an indoor training facility that features former big league baseball star Jeff Hamilton, a Carman High School all-stater who won a World Series ring with legendary Tommy Lasorda and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Roger Foutch has also assembled a new Connie Mack franchise for 18-&-under high school all-stars that will begin play this summer under the leadership of Jeff Hamilton.

Come check out the new facility Wednesday and chat with me about how you can help our non-profit organization known as the Greater Flint Baseball-Softball Association. As a member of the non-profit organization's board of directors, I also urge you to support our annual Tom Cole Memorial Golf Scramble June 23 at the Elks of Grand Blanc. If you want to help, bring a check Wednesday that can be from you individually or from your business as a tax deductible contribution to the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Any donation helps but it's $100 per player for the golf scramble fundraiser. Signs are also available at $100 each to sponsor a hole at the event.

You and your friends are welcome to bring little guys (or girls!) Wednesday to take a few swings in the indoor batting cages for free, compliments of Roger Foutch and Dave Dohrman. Adults can take some free swings, too!

Pizza and pop will be available at Strike Zone from 5 pm until 7 pm Wednesday. The minimum contribution to support Don Pfeiffer's campaign is $25 to attend, but kids can get in absolutely free. An "After Party" gathering will be held next door at Foutch's Pub at 7:15 pm to assemble a steering committee to help elect Don Pfeiffer to support the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce's mission to once again make our community the best place on earth to live, work and play!

Sincerely and individually on behalf of:
Mike Killbreath,
President, Flint Area Chamber of Commerce
President, eToday Inc.
President, ADvantage Media Group LLC
President, Tri-County Publishing Inc.

RESIDENTS OF CITY OF FLUSHING NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE REZONING OF ALL OF THE VACANT PROPERTY FROM RESIDENTIAL TO HIGH VOLUME WHICH IS LOCATED BY FOSTORIAN NURSING HOME,THE PONDS AND SPRINGVIEW SCHOOL THAT WILL ALLOW LARGE MULTIPLE COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS/ COMPLEX TO BE BUILT BY A COMMERCIAL BUSINESS CALL ANGEL MANNOR, LLC . OUR CITY COUNCIL PLANNING COMMISSION TRIED TO VOTE ON IT ON MAY 5TH. I RECEIVED A LETTER ABOUT IT BECAUSE MY HOME TOUCHES A SMALL PART OF THE PROPERTY BEING REQUESTED TO BE REZONED. I had no idea what it was about other than there was a petition to rezone the property from single family residential R1 to high density R3B. I was the only citizen of Flushing there as I believe I was the only one that received the letter.

The council will be meeting again on June 2nd to vote on the zoning change. Everyone needs to know what was revealed at the May 5th meeting. If the rezoning is ratified City of Flushing residents will be effected in several ways. The company is requesting the rezoning so they can build 4 very large buildings for housing of 20 plus people with memory loss per building as well as a building for a Memory Loss Clinic. Building plans were not provided. The company only stated it will take 2-3 years to complete due to the size of the buildings.

The sewer system from Sunnyside to the Sewage Plant on Industrial Drive can not handle the increased volume of sewage nor can the storm drains. When the sewer system is beyond capacity the sewage dumps into the river from the Sewage Plant. This was publicized by Dennis Bow, previous City Manager, on M-Live. When I inquired if the company would pay for the upgrade of the sewer system one of the council members commented that the city will increase our water bill to compensate the upgrade which would be millions of dollars.

The wet land by the ponds will also be effected if the commercial complex is built. One of the council members shared concerns for the safety of the children at Springview Schools and asked the company what their plans were for adequate security to protect people from escaping the complex.

The change in the zoning will allow large apartment buildings to be built even if the company, Angel Mannor, decides not to build and another company does.

The list of what effects are numerous and I highly suggest City of Flushing residents call the Flushing City Manager and ask questions as well as request a copy of the minutes for the May 5th meeting. The phone number for the city is 810-659-3130.

Please attend the City of Flushing council meeting on June 2 at 7:30 p.m. so that you can understand and see the slight-handedness that is occurring.

One of the council members commented that the City would not mind to see the increased revenue that this business would bring. We need to keep the woods, trails and wetlands intact. Have the company go build their complex somewhere else thus preventing adverse effects to long established residential subdivision and potential risk of safety of our children.

The parcel # is 55-25-200-044 located on Sunnyside Dr.,which involves approximately 51 acres of land.

Speakers are available for your group to discuss community tree planting initiatives provided by a grant for the City of Flint.

Neighborhood coordinators can receive a $100 stipend to plan and coordinate the planting of trees. At least 10 signatures re required from individuals agreeable to have a tree planted in the parkways. Signs and overhead wires may restrict some plantings so you might want to obtain even more signatures. The group can use the money for neighborhood cleanups, beautification or a block party.

The Conservation District has contracted with a nursery so the tree placement will undergo an evaluation process. There will be no planting of only one variety of tree per street so s to prevent a tragedy like the one in the south side where the Emerald Ash Borer wped aou all of the trees on at least two street,

They cannot cut trees on private property but they can refer to copanies that will remove dangerous trees for a price.

The Urbanwood Showcase 2014

* Genesee Conservation District and the Urbanwood projct rescue wood from local hazardous trees. They then send the wood to mills that cut, dry and plane the wood. This is not construction grade wood, but it can be used for many projects.

* The Genesee County Haitat for Humanity's Restore stocks a wide variety of reclaimed wood- trees that are milled into uable boards nstead of being chipped.

The Urbanwood Showcase will highlight how local trees can become useful objects and imaginative works of art. Whether you are a crfter, artist, or a traditional woodworker, we hope that you'll shre your talent and join in the excitement.

entries will received until November 1,2014

The Urbanwood Project began in 2005 as part of an effort to encourage nore recycling od dead urban trees in southeastern Michigan. Many local businesses have joined together through this project to provide the widest selection of hgh quality, sustainable wood products vailable in the area. Where most people only see waste and loss when trees are removed from the communities, Urbanwood's members and supporters know better: These trees can live on as green products
that conserve resources and support local jobs.

Flint River Watershed Coalition looking for volunteers to monitor water quality
Print Molly Young | myoung7@mlive.com By Molly Young | myoung7@mlive.com

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Volunteers will participate in The Flint River Watershed Coalition's water quality monitoring program Thursday, May 15.

Volunteers will sample macroinvertebrets like caddis fly larva, dragonfly larva and snails to from 35 sites across Genesee and Lapeer counties to assess the health and water quality of the Flint River and surrounding waterways.

New monitors can be trained on site by experienced volunteers, learning to conduct habitat assessments, to collect and identify "creek critters" and to understand the process of water quality monitoring.

Samples collected will be evaluated in one of two labs within the counties, and data collected will be used by the FRWC and state and local agencies to protect the watershed.

For more information or to register, contact Jaime Welch at 810-767-7140 or at jwelch@flintriver.org.
