Flint master plan 'project studio' opens in Capitol Theatre downtown

FLINT, MI -- Flint residents interested in helping to plan for Flint's future can now do so inside one of the city's most notable landmarks of its past.

A new master plan project studio has opened inside the historic Capitol Theatre, 140 E. 2nd St. in downtown Flint.

The space was created in the hope of boosting community engagement in the master plan process.

Flint residents and other interested persons can stop in and chat with staff, fill out surveys and questionnaires, use studio computers to interact with the project website and view planning materials, officials said.

The studio will be open Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. starting next week.

My understanding is that some of these committees are having trouble getting those who signed up to attend the subcommittee meetings. Perception is reality, There appears to be a general mistrust of the process because to many residents the perception is that the plan is already completed. At least one master Planning document addesses the mistrust the residents have of the process.

The Freedom of Information Act, also called the "Sunshine Act", was enacted to make government accountable to the people it purports to represent. When the government conducts business under a cloak of secrecy, that secrecy breeds mistrust of one's government and injures the spirit of the citizens. Sunshine is considered to be a natural disinfectant and bringing government actions into the sunshine is considered a remedy for the disease of corrupt government.

When the plans created years ago by entities such as Kettering, University of Michigan and the downown groups are already under implementation, it is difficult to believe there will be much change in the planning process. The north end has been ignored and now the Citizens District Councils have been eliminated, so the citizens are expressing that they see little future for them.

There is a strong belief expressed across much of the city that there is a "shadow government" controlled by the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Mott Foundation, FARO, Prima Civitas and their associated entities. The plan to move the farmers market was in a document from 2002 created by Tim Herman's group. The deisre to tear down the Genesee Towers was obvious and not hidden for over ten years.

Citizen mistrust will not be restored until those in leadership are gone and the government secrecy is eliminated.

Hi Everyone,

Enclosed please find the agenda for the March 5th Steering Committee
Meeting at the Flint Public Library. The Consultant will present their
recommendations for the boundaries of the eight subarea plans. The
Steering Committee will discuss and hopefully form a recommendation for the
Planning Commission's consideration. The goal is to identify the eight
subarea plans by April 1st. The Steering Committee is interested in
hearing from the larger community about this. Please attend if you would
like to provide comment during these deliberations. You can also attend
the Planning Commission meetings on March 12th and 26th at 6:00 p.m. at
City Hall.

Take care,
Megan
