FLINT, MI -- A man asked a Flint resident for a check during a Dec. 4 home invasion in the 2000 block of Pierce Street, according to a police report.
The victim told police Dec. 5 that he answered the door to the home around 7:45 a.m. and the suspect -- described as a 40-year-old black male, 5-feet-9 inches tall, mustache and stocky build -- pushed his way into the home and demanded money.

With the male suspect's hand in his pocket like he was holding a gun, the victim said he had $50 which was apparently not good enough. The suspect then asked the victim to write him a check for $188.

The suspect then entered into a silver, older model Cadillac and striking the victim's maroon GMC Sierra before driving away from the scene. There was no word in the report regarding any arrest.

3 men arrested, suspected in organized auto theft ring

Posted: Dec 10, 2013 11:34 AM EST

By ABC12 News Team - email

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY (WJRT) -
(12/10/13) - Three Detroit men are in the Shiawassee County jail, now charged, for their alleged roles in what authorities said was an organized auto theft ring.

The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office said they were arrested at an Owosso area dealership, Dec. 2, trying to get a key made for a vehicle they may have been trying to steal from a dealership in Perry.

Laronte Benion, Tyron Fergerson and Sterling Gist each face one count of attempted unlawful driving away of an automobile and one count of conspiracy to commit the unlawful driving away of an automobile. Both are felonies. Fergerson and Gist are charged as habitual offenders, according to the sheriff's office.

Sheriff George Braidwood said the thieves would act interested in a vehicle, swap in a dummy key at the dealership and then come back after hours with the real one and just drive off.

"It doesn't get any simpler than that," Braidwood said.

But eventually someone will slip up.

Why the men were where they were when arrested, Young Chevrolet Cadillac, doesn't make sense.

"They were trying to get a key made," Braidwood said. "They were in possession of a key to a brand new vehicle from the dealership in Perry."

Yet they were in the Owosso area trying to get another one cut, according to Braidwood.

What the men didn't know was there was a surveillance camera picture plastered out of their view - something staff had been studying for well over a year.

An observant employee picked up on it and called police.

"The guy, almost, was wearing the same thing in the picture," said Tony Young, President of Young Chevrolet Cadillac. :I peeked my head into parts and thought, 'Yep, it's the same guy.'"

The picture had been distributed to dealerships by one that had been hit with the dummy key crime.

"Kudos to the dealerships for getting involved and helping us with our work," said Braidwood.

Young's staff had good reason to be alert.

In April of 2012, five vehicles were stolen the same way - a brand new, $85,000 Cadillac Escalade included.

Authorities are working to connect the trio to that theft.

"I think they prey on little, country dealers, thinking we're asleep at the wheel," said Young. "But it's the country dealers that had the photos of him. It's the country dealers that caught them."

Flint man accused of luring Clio woman into prostitution ring with free crack cocaine

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man is behind bars after authorities say he recruited a Clio woman into a prostitution ring by luring her with free crack cocaine.

Christopher Mardell Davis, 25, was arrested following surveillance by the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, Flint police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

Pickell said the investigation began after his office was contacted Thursday, Dec. 5, by the FBI with information regarding a potential human trafficking ring.

Authorities learned that Davis was allegedly driving a 2007 Dodge Magnum and operating the ring out of area hotels, Pickell said. The investigation led officials to hotels in Flint, Burton and Flint Township as well as houses in Flint and Richfield Township. Investigators conducted a traffic stop Dec. 6 on Davis near Dort Highway and Davison Road after leaving a hotel near Dort and Hemphill Road in Burton.

Pickell said authorities conducting surveillance on a house on Indiana Avenue as part of the investigation stopped a man and a woman as they left the home. Investigators were given permission to search the home and discovered a 20-year-old Clio woman who was forced into prostitution, Pickell said.

Pickell said the woman met Davis and told him that she wanted to become a stripper to help her pay bills. However, Pickell said Davis allegedly began giving the woman free crack cocaine and setting up "dates" for her at area hotels where she was forced to prostitute herself. The woman was forced to turn over any money she made during the encounters to Davis, Pickell said.

"She wasn't allowed to keep any of the money," Pickell said.

Authorities obtained an arrest warrant Dec. 9 for Davis. He was arraigned on charges of accepting the earnings of a prostitute and transporting a woman for the purpose of prostitution, both 20-year felonies.
Davis was lodged in the Genesee County Jail on a $500,000 cash or surety bond.

Charity employee accused of stealing federal prosecutor's identity
6:28 PM, December 11, 2013 |

By Tresa Baldas

Detroit Free Press Staff Writer

A federal prosecutor in Flint was scammed by a Big Brothers Big Sisters employee who stole the lawyer’s identity to support a cocaine habit — in a roundabout way, according to court records filed today.

Amanda Casanova, the accused identity thief, told authorities that she stole the identities of several people through her job at Big Brothers Big Sisters to open up credit cards, which she used to buy cell phones. She then sold the phones for $140 apiece to buy cocaine, the affidavit said.

Here, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, is what led authorities to Casanova.

This past fall, several employees at the federal courthouse in Flint agreed to participate in the Genesee County Big Brothers Big Sisters program. One of them was an unnamed federal prosecutor, who was recently contacted by a bank official, asking him to verify a credit card application. But he had never applied for any credit cards.

The prosecutor realized he had been duped. He obtained a credit report and discovered that multiple credit cards had been opened in his name. He called the U.S. Secret Service.

An electronic trail of evidence led authorities to a home on West Franklin Street in Flint. Surveillance was conducted on the home on Dec. 10, when a woman was spotted walking up to the house to check the mailbox before heading to a bus stop.

A federal agent stopped the woman and asked who she was and where she was going. She identified herself as Casanova, said she lived at the home, and that she was going to work at Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Her arrest followed.

During booking, authorities learned that Casanova’s cellular number matched the number that was used on the fake credit card applications. After being read her rights, Casanova fessed up that she had stolen the identities of several people while working for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and that she remembered the names of her victims, including the prosecutor, the complaint said.

That same day, her boyfriend, Sean Edwards, was arrested on a state warrant. He told authorities that he knew about his girlfriend’s identity theft scheme, and that he went with her to buy the cell phones with the fake credit cards, records show.

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Genesee County could not be reached for comment.

Court documents do not yet list any attorneys of record for Casanova or Edwards, who could not be located for comment.

Midland shoplifters may be part of bigger theft ring

Posted: Dec 11, 2013 5:33 PM EST

By Terry Camp - email

MIDLAND (WJRT) -
(12/11/13) - Four people from Genesee County charged with stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise from a Midland Kohl's store, might be part of a bigger theft ring.

Police say the group stole a large amount of items from the Kohl's store on Joe Mann Boulevard earlier this week. They were arrested a few miles away, on US-10.

Now police in other counties want to question them.

Police say this was not your typical shoplifting case, where items are concealed. They say the four people grabbed as much stuff as they could, threw it in two shopping carts, and ran out of the store.

Christopher Ming, Thomas Biggs, Mario Pegues - all of Flint - and Arleisa Smith of Grand Blanc, all face at least five years in prison for retail fraud. During a court appearance on Wednesday, Pegues claimed he is in the military and had just returned from active duty in Afghanistan.

The four are accused of going into the Kohl's store in Midland on Monday afternoon and taking close to $5,000 worth of merchandise - everything from electronic tablets to clothing - from the store, putting the items in two shopping carts, running out of the store, and putting the shopping carts in their SUV. An SUV matching the description from witnesses was stopped not far from the store on US-10.

"The way the individuals were walking out in a quick manner, the amount of items in the carts, and then setting off the alarms in the stores," said Sgt. Michael Sokol, of the Midland Police Department.

During the hearing, Midland County Prosecutor Michael Carpenter told Circuit Court Judge Stephen Carras that the four are believed to be part of a theft ring that has hit stores in other counties. Bond for the three men was set between $20,000 - $50,000 cash.

"We have belief they are also involved in shoplifting complaints in three other stores across the state of Michigan," Sokol said.

Sokol says police agencies and retailers are on the lookout for retail fraud during the Christmas shopping season.

"We definitely spend more time around the retails areas around this time of the year," Sokol said.

Midland Police are still working with other law enforcement agencies that have had similar crimes to see if the four people could face charges in other counties.

Flint woman gets prison time for carwash stabbing death

FLINT, MI -- A Flint woman was sentenced to prison for her role in the stabbing death of 22-year-old DeMarkus Barnett.

Marjani Abdur-Rahman, 24, a friend of Barnett's ex-girlfriend, was sentenced Monday, Dec. 16, by Genesee Circuit Judge Judith A. Fullerton to seven years, six months to 15 years in prison after she pleaded no contest to manslaughter for the December 2012 death of Barnett.

Abdur-Rahman was initially charged with open murder and faced up to life in prison if convicted.

Barnett, 22, was found unresponsive from a stab wound to the chest around 2 a.m. Dec. 9, 2012, in the parking lot of a car wash on Robert T. Longway Boulevard near Averill Avenue. He was later pronounced dead.

"There was a self-defense issue in this case," said Special Assistant Genesee County Prosecutor John Potbury. "The defendant's position was that she was protecting her friend but ultimately, her actions crossed the line."

Ashely Herrera, Barnett's ex-girlfriend who was with Abdur-Rahman the night of Barnett's death, testified during an April 15 preliminary exam that Abdur-Rahman stabbed Barnett following an argument outside a Flint nightclub.

Herrera testified that she, Abdur-Rahman and a third friend were at the club on the 3000 block of Robert T. Longway when they saw Barnett.

"He tried to come and say 'Hi,'" Herrera testified, adding that Barnett grabbed her arm. Abdur-Rahman responded by pushing Barnett away, the woman said. Barnett again approached the women outside of the club as they left. Herrera testified Abdur-Rahman punched Barnett.

After the punch, Herrera said she, Abdur-Rahman and their friend went to their car to leave the club. Herrera testified that Barnett pulled up next to them in his own vehicle, began arguing with Abdur-Rahman and threatened to pull a gun on her. Herrera testified that Barnett was known to regularly carry a gun.

"(Abdur-Rahman) kept telling me I shouldn't be talking to him," Herrera testified, adding that Abdur-Rahman believed that Barnett abused her during their relationship. Herrera denied there was any physical abuse.

Both Barnett and Abdur-Rahman drove away from the club without incident, Herrera testified.

But, not long later, Herrera said Abdur-Rahman spotted Barnett's car at the car wash and she pulled in next to him. Abdur-Rahman allegedly got out of her car with a knife and began arguing with Barnett.

Abdur-Rahman then stabbed Barnett in the chest, according to Herrera.

Herrera, Abdur-Rahman and their friend left the carwash believing that Barnett was injured but still alive. Barnett died from his injuries.

Stacy Muter of Columbiaville has a toddler son with Barnett and the two were dating for about three years before his death. Muter said he was a social person who had many friends.

"My son can't even talk and (when he does) he's going to be asking about his dad," Muter previously told The Flint Journal. "What am I supposed to tell him? Just some random person killed him for nothing?"

FLINT, MI -- A Burton man is facing more than two years in federal prison after authorities claim he was selling heroin out of his Burton home.

Tony Andrew Boyd, 37, pleaded guilty Thursday, Dec. 19, in Flint U.S. District Court to possession with intent to distribute heroin after police uncovered guns in drugs in his Lippincott Boulevard home.

Police were conducting surveillance Oct. 23 on the home on the 3000 block of Lippincott Boulevard when they conducted a traffic stop on Boyd. Boyd was arrested for an outstanding warrant. Flint District Court records show Boyd had a warrant for a May incident of having improper plates on a vehicle.

Officers searched Boyd and discovered a medical marijuana card and a large amount of cash, according to court records.

Agents from the Flint Area Narcotics Group executed a search warrant at the home and discovered nearly an ounce of heroin and a large amount of cash, according to court records. Agents also found multiple guns, including a rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun and a .4-caliber MAC-10 semi-automatic handgun.

Police also executed a warrant at a motel room on South Dort Highway in Flint and recovered another .38-caliber semi-automatic handgun and a large amount of cash that belonged to Boyd, according to court records.

Boyd has two previous gun and drug convictions.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 17.
