Flint teens face charges after carjacking, armed robbery

By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com
on January 17, 2013 at 9:00 PM, updated January 17, 2013 at 10:16 PM

FLINT, MI -- Two Flint teens are facing charges after they carjacked a woman at gunpoint earlier this month on the city's north side.

Dameireo D. Bunch, 17, is charged with carjacking, armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and felony firearms after he and a 16-year-old took the car as the woman waited at a stop sign on Seneca and Dayton streets.

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said the suspects entered the back seat of the woman's 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue around 7 p.m. Jan. 7.

Bunch allegedly held the gun to the back of the woman's head and threatened her before he exited the vehicle, pulled the woman out by her hair, pushed her into the snow and "threatened to blow her head off," Pickell said.

The two suspects allegedly made off in the stolen car.

Sheriff paramedic Justin Hunt spotted the stolen vehicle around 3:20 a.m. Jan. 8 near Wisner and Myrtle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

Pickell said the suspects fled in the car before crashing on Canterburry Lane. The suspects fled on foot but were arrested a short time later.

A 9-millimeter pistol was discovered in the snow following the arrest, Pickell said.

Bunch is scheduled for a preliminary exam on the charges Jan. 24. The other suspect is being tried as a juvenile and is being held in the regional detention center.

FLINT (WJRT) -
(01/19/13) - A Michigan State Police trooper was involved in a shooting late Friday night.

It all unfolded near North Saginaw Street and East Alma Avenue in Flint. That's on the city's northside.

State Police tell us it all started with a traffic stop. Two people were in the car.

The trooper put the passenger in the back of his cruiser.

When he went to talk to the driver, and was searching him, the trooper felt what he thought was a gun.

A struggle then started, and the driver was able to get back in his car. He started driving, with the trooper hanging on.

The driver then crashed into a tree, less than a block away, throwing the trooper from the car.

State Police say the driver then got out of his car, and came towards the trooper. That's when the trooper shot the man.

No word yet on either man's condition.

Snowspecial has some good questions, did the individual have a gun? Well he assaulted a police officer, resisted and evaded, so when he drove off with the police officer hanging on was endangerment at least, so after hitting the tree the officer was justified in feeling his life was in danger also knowing several of our state police I would almost guarantee he ordered the suspect to halt before firing, the camera you asked about is mounted in the cruiser and easily could have been out of range when the suspect drove off. due officers ride alone sadly yes because unless we as citizens our willing to pay higher taxes there is no budget to put them out there in teams. and Kay you are so right, my observations and opinions here are from a civilian but one who was Military Police so I have some familiarity with the types of procedures. Best wishes and prayers to the officer.

"The trooper felt what he thought was a gun"?? So was it a gun??? No police officer should be working alone in the City of Fl;int day or night. When the man came toward the office was he holding or pointing a gun or was his hands in the air trying to surrender? Only the camera can answer these questions and my guess is the camera was not running or not working.

Are these Police Officers working alone, without a partner in the "jungle" after dark?

FLINT, MI -- Michigan State Police in Lansing confirmed Saturday, Jan. 19, that a state trooper had been involved in a shooting Friday night, Jan. 18, after a traffic stop on Flint's north side.

According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, the state trooper was injured while hanging onto a vehicle as it fled the scene after a traffic stop.

The suspect was receiving medical attention at Hurley Medical Center, Leyton said. The suspect's condition is unknown, Leyton said.
Leyton declined to release the reason for the traffic stop.

Details emerge in Flint shooting involving Michigan State trooper

By Chris Aldridge | caldridg@mlive.com
on January 19, 2013 at 6:00 PM, updated January 19, 2013 at 8:22 PM

FLINT, MI -- A man who a state trooper shot after a traffic stop late Friday was in critical condition at Hurley Medical Center Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19.

A Michigan State Police trooper received minor injuries and was treated and released from a Flint hospital.

The incident occurred on East Alma Avenue. The area had been blocked off late Friday and early Saturday by police tape between Fulton and Saginaw streets.

Officers had been dispatched to the area at 11:10 p..m., Friday, Jan. 18, state police said.

Two state troopers pulled over a car occupied by three individuals for a traffic stop. All occupants were removed from the vehicle and one was arrested for outstanding warrants, state police reported.

Two of the occupants were male and one female, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said.

A trooper searched the driver and discovered a handgun. As an arrest was under way, a struggle ensued between the driver and trooper. The suspect pulled away and got back into the vehicle, state police said.

The trooper held onto the driver and the doorway of the vehicle as the suspect drove off. The driver struck a tree in an attempt to remove the trooper from the door of the vehicle, state police reported.

After striking a light pole, the vehicle came to a stop, sending the trooper into a fence before falling to the ground. The driver emerged from the vehicle and started toward the trooper, state police said.

Fearing for his life, the trooper shot the driver while he was on the ground, state police said. It was later determined the suspect had an arrest warrant for an assault with intent to murder.

The trooper was released from the hospital after receiving medical attention for minor injuries, said Detective Marvin Jenkins, who is in charge of the investigation.

Leyton said the trooper is "OK" after receiving medical attention.

Friday night, state police detectives at the scene said it was an "officer involved situation."

A car could be seen crashed up against a tree on the south side of the road in the 600 block of East Alma Avenue just after midnight Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing.

That's probably why Lock said he'd wait for the full year numbers when the FBI crime rate report came out recently. It's getting to be pretty common knowledge that crime in Flint is being under reported.

Plea agreement reached in fatal 2005 retaliatory Flint shooting

By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com
on January 23, 2013 at 2:00 PM, updated January 23, 2013 at 4:06 PM

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man has pleaded guilty to reduced charges for a retaliatory shooting that killed a 19-year-old Flint man in 2005.

Jamel Donte Cheeks, 27, of Flint, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony firearms Tuesday, Jan. 22, for the death of Jerrell L. Mays.

Mays was found dead in a driveway at 3622 Kleinpell St. about 12:20 a.m. June 22, 2005, according to MLive-Flint Journal records. A second victim, Demerio D. Bonds was also treated for a gunshot wound to the lower right leg at Hurley Medical Center.

Both men were shot with a 7.62mm assault rifle, police said.

Cheeks’ attorney, Michael Breczinski, said Mays was killed in retaliation for a 2003 incident that left Cheeks shot.

“He was out looking for the people who shot him,” Breczinski said.

Bonds, Rodney Frisby and Arzell Little are each charged with assault with intent to murder for the 2003 shooting of Cheeks. Charges against the three were announced earlier this month as part of the continued investigation in the alleged Howard Boys gang.

Authorities say the Howard Boys used violence to control a territorial drug operation on the city’s south side since 2002.

Cheeks initially faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, carrying concealed weapons and felony firearms.

Authorities alleged that Cheeks, and others, conspired to kill members of the Terrace Boys street gang.

Officials have not said if Cheeks belonged to the Howard Boys gang or was an associate of the gang.

"The plea agreement requires truthful testimony in several other homicide cases plus truthful testimony in federal court -- all related to the Howard Boys prosecution," Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said.

Prosecutors recommended that Cheeks be sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison on the second-degree murder charge. Felony firearms carries a mandatory sentence of two years in prison.

Sentencing by Genesee Circuit Judge Judith A. Fullerton has not been set.

Cheeks is currently serving time at the Macomb Correctional Facility after pleading no contest to second-degree home invasion in 2008. He also has previous convictions of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of cocaine.
