GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Residents can now keep up with what the county government is up to without having to drive to downtown Flint.

Meeting minutes, a written accounting of what happens during public commission meetings, are now available online on the county's website.

County Clerk John Gleason said his office began publishing the minutes online to allow the public to hold officials accountable.

"A lot of things that went wrong...whether it's the water situation in Flint, misspending the public dollars happens because we don't allow folks like (the media) to have access, and more importantly the citizens," Gleason said at a press conference Friday, March 24.

Previously, the schedule of meetings and agendas were available on the county website. Now, the meeting minutes and resolutions are also available.

Gleason said it was thanks in large part to new commissioner Drew Shapiro, who he says stood up to other politicians that didn't want the public to know the board's actions.

Mark Young, who chairs the Board of Commissioners, said it's actually something commissioners have been urging the clerk's office to do for some time.

"Since the ultimate responsibility of having the minutes of the meeting falls on the Clerk Gleason, I congratulate him for finally, after four years of being the clerk, I applaud him for finally putting those things online where they should have been all along."

Shapiro, R-District 6, was at Gleason's press conference Friday and said it's just one step toward the transparency he promised during his campaign to create.

"It was a total lack of transparency and it was my No. 1 campaign promise to improve transparency in county government, and this is just one step, two months into office, that we've taken to do that," Shapiro said.

Much credit needs to go to a group of women activists, including Bobby Clayton Walton demanding transparency in county government. They went between the clerk and the commissioners.

Thank you Drew Shapiro for making it finally happen.
