A physical fight at Flint Bishop airport this week has brought renewed attention to an ongoing political battle at Flint City Hall.

Council members say they have proof that the head of city's Major Grants Department, Tamar Lewis, was heading out of town on city business this week.
This comes at a time that she told council she wouldn't respond to their hearing subpoena because she was out on sick leave.

Today council is demanding answers about what is gong on.

To bring some of the pieces together, we should point out that the fight broke out while Councilwoman Carolyn Sims and Kate Field, of the East Side Neighborhood Association, were tracking Lewis.

Lewis' mother reportedly tried to block the pictures taken by Fields. She is said to have grabbed at the camera and a fight broke out between the two women.

City Council members claim that the pictures of her leaving town raise some serious questions.

"We're talking about a person who is on sick leave. We're talking about a person who said she could not respond about a subpoena," said Councilwoman Carolyn Sims

When they took the pictures Tuesday of Lewis getting ready to board a flight to Denver for a brownfields conference on city business, they became suspicious.

"This is not a game, because I take my position on the council very seriously," Sims said.

Sims says the issue is that Lewis and the mayor have been legally subpoenaed to testify in front of council over of the loss of $1.4 million in block grant money Both have refused to show up.

The mayor's aide, Joe Conroy, shrugs off the charges, calling the situation election day politics. "It's just a way prevent their loses on Tuesday."

But council says there are still serious questions to be answered "She was on stress leave and then paid by the city. She out an out lied about when she was summoned to come to court," said Council President Johnnie Coleman.

Conroy, however, doesn't see a conflict.

After the election, council says, the matter will likely come up again -.perhaps in a legal venue.

Another Kate Fields snafu!

The city lost grant money because council refused to re-allocate money from two failing agencies. HUD says use it in a specified time frame or lose it. This was EM Kurtz's "lame duck " move- giving money to agencies that did not meet HUD guidelines. Flint West Village had lost over 120 properties to nonpayment of taxes and owed taxes on the remainder of their properties.

It was Dan Kildee, then Treasurer, who explained to me how over inflation of the property values gave the incorrect impression these two entities were viable. The Flint West Village Director wanted to repurchase the lot properties to rebuild their financial portfolio.

Some council members said they needed to give these agencies money in order to be re-elected.
