FLINT, MI -- City Councilwoman Monica Galloway is joining seven other registered write-in candidates in the campaign for mayor of Flint.

Galloway filed paperwork with the city Clerk's Office Friday, July 24, and announced her long-shot campaign on the front lawn of City Hall.

In addition to the write-in candidates, four candidates will appear on the Aug. 4 primary ballot -- councilmen Eric Mays and Wantwaz Davis, incumbent Mayor Dayne Walling and businesswoman Karen Weaver.

The top two vote-getters in the primary will advance to the General Election in November.

Galloway, 47, said she has the leadership skills needed to work with the city's Receivership Transition Advisory Board and City Administrator Natasha Henderson.

She said those who don't believe a write-in candidate can advance beyond the primary are underestimating voters.

"We have a smart community, and writing somebody's name is not that difficult," she said.

In addition to Galloway, candidates who have filed to be registered write-ins are: Raymond A. Hall, 52; David Davenport, 47; Jacquelyn M. Jbir, 59; Ellery Johnson, 39; Robert Lee Johnson, 52; Timothy D. Lamay, 63; and Angela Ward, 40.

The real question voters have to ask themselves is, "Why did Dane Walling pay Galloway to become a candidate?".

This is a classic maneuver to dilute your competitors chances - in this case paying a women to go against the only other women in the race that can knock you out.

Flint don't fall for this cheap political trick.

Karen Weaver is the best candidate on the ballot. She was a hospital administrator, holds a doctorate in psychology, former Dir Behavioral Health Mott Hospital, business owner, former CEO of Ennis Children's Center, former member board of Hurley Hospital. Trustee Flint Institute of Arts. She is much better qualified to be Mayor of Flint than any candidate and will be a much better Mayor than the current mayor. She matches and does better than anyone on the ballot, write in or otherwise.

The only requirements are to be a registered elector, announce a write in candidacy or get your name in the ballot and receive enough votes to make it through the primary. I will vote for Karen Williams Weaver .

Present tense

A mayor has staff for critical functions. The voters pick the quality of the person. Walling has been weighed , measured and found lacking. Weaver is a quality person who we can trust.

All 8 write in candidates only received 120 votes.

I am told that Walling was called a liar by a prominent pastor on a weekend show sponsored by local pastors.

After reviewing his campaign literature it appears he is taking credit for the Drain Commissioner and the Karegondi Pipe line. Hmmm he only sits on a board established by the Drain Commission.

When challenged on transparency in regards to HUD programs, Walling claimed these discussions were discussed openly in council and the Flint Journal didn't have a clue on reporting these discussions. He forgot I was at the hearing where Peter Bade admitted he deliberately kept the loss of the Department of Energy Grand and the subsequent investigation from the council. Flint must have complained about HUD and FOIA's because those of us who had been declared to be exempt from fees suddenly received notice of potential $1200 charges, in violation of memorandums to promote transparency. HUD screwed up in Flint and Michigan making it necessary to hide some of their ineptitude.

When was the last time the media reported on HUD findings if an OIG audit was not involved?

A neighbor owns a trucking company that is rapidly growing. His efforts to utilize the old McDonald Dairy building was initially met with enthusiasm from city officials. He states certain downtown groups began to create issues. Then the vandals struck, he said, They entered the premises multiple times to pillage and loot. The last time they set the building on fire and destroyed generators and other equipment. He has since moved his operation south of Flint. He hopes home values increase so he doesn't such a heavy hit on his home. He is heavily investing in his business.

Unfortunately, I noticed a for sale sign on a ranch home that I have admired. I was surprised to see the home listed in Real estate Digest for under $69,000. The home has many updates including a kitchen remodel with oak cabinets and granite countertops,. Many county listings that paled in comparison to this house started at $137,000 and up.

City lots in the New Northern area often have a great front yard, but sometimes lack a back yard. However, the houses in Ann Arbor frequently lack any kind of yard and a dated and worn house can sell for over $200,000.

A landlord once offered a hose free if I knew anyone who would invest in it. It seems with the rising cost of a rental in Flint, the 2 bedroom homes are in small demand and are expendable. Other landlord have multiple properties up for sale.
