Afternoon shooting happens as Flint Police open new mini station

Flint Police are expanding the department

FLINT (WJRT) - (05/11/15) - An afternoon shooting on the south side of Flint sent one man to the hospital.

He's expected to be OK, but Flint residents say the yellow tape and flashing police lights are way too common in the city.

Monday's shooting happened less than a mile from the grand opening of a Flint Police Community Service Center on Dort Highway near Atherton.

It is just the latest example of why crime prevention is a top priority at the Flint Police Department, and part of that is getting back to community policing.

Flint resident Kenny Timbs has been in a south side Flint neighborhood for three decades.

"I've seen it when it was booming and I've seen the decline," Timbs said.

That decline he's referring to has come with a lot of crime.

The homicide count in the city is already at 18 this year, with dozens of other non-deadly shootings also in the case files.

While Flint Police work to solve those crimes, they are also working to prevent others.

A brand new Flint Police Community Service Center on the city's south side should help.

"Knowing that we are here could possibly stop somebody from doing something because they know we are in the neighborhood," said Flint Police Chief James Tolbert.

The Dort Mall site will be staffed with volunteers, along with a Flint officer.

You can walk right in to make a police report or just talk with an officer.

Another service offered there seeks to solve problems through communication instead of violence.

"We will use this center to have mediation and work through their differences so maybe it won't become a criminal issue," Tolbert said.

Timbs says sometimes feeling secure in your own home comes with knowing there's a police officer right around the corner.

"I think it would be a good thing the police coming around here. Just the appearance of them changes things," Timbs said.

There are two other Community Service Centers in Flint. Tolbert said the goal is to eventually have one in each of the city's nine wards

The media only covered the opening and barely mentioned the shooting of a young man. I was in the area and watched many police cars state police cars and sheriffs deputies cars racing to the scene. Each crime scene requires multiple officers and ties them up for hours. To Channel 12 it was just a point to beef up their story on a mini station opening manned by volunteers.

New, hell no! We previously had the city working to open 9 mini stations then dumped many because of finances. It appears we are following in the footprints of Detroit who is also creating community relations opportunities.

However, anyone who reads Flint Police Operations and Genesee County Scanners realizes the television media is not reporting most of the violence (some days none of it). The Flint Journal does better but even then it is inadequate.

It would appear the television media is falsely presenting mostly feel good stories. (Channel 12 seems like the worst to me.) I find myself gravitating towards Channel 25 for more accurate reporting.

The Flint 911 system receives multiple calls daily about shot fired throughout the city . Also other acts of violence goes unreported. Don't the residents deserve the truth?

For those who really want to know what is happening in Flint, they really have to listen to the scanner sites or read the Flint Police Operations or Genesee County Scanners.

Last night was hopefully not a glimpse into our future summer. While shots were fired early evening in the 1500 block of Montana, things got much worse in the hours around 1 am to 3 am.

While the media was reporting the fire at Court and Dort, shots fired were terrorizing whole neighborhoods.

While the Michigan state Police were reporting an arrest of 2 suspects in Flint Township, there were reports of shots fired in the 3900 block of Zimmerman. Around the same time multiple shot were fired around the Regency Apartments. Multiple police units were sent and even the police heard the shots.

Near I time there were calls stating as many as 20 shots were fired in the 800 block of Tacken and the calls continued to come in. Originally it was said a man was down in a yard, but later reports said a gunshot victim could not be located.

Less than an hour later there wer reports of shots fired a Tiffen and Marquette, and Stone and Wood streets. Additionally at least 6 shots were heard at 2300 Lapeer in the Lapeer Gardens Apartments.

The media has scanners but only a few stories come out days later and only if violent.

There continues o be a rash of "shots fired" calls nightly. Last night they appeared to be concentrated on the east side. Flint does not have enough officers to run these calls down all night.

One shooting scene can nearly deplete all available officers to protect and investigate the scene.
