Facebook family and friends, thanksgiving is right around the corner. All of us have something to feel thankful for; God has been merciful and just to all. We may not have all that we want but, provision for are needs will always be afforded to us by God. Being mindful for all that he (God) has done for my family and I, I've taken the pleasure to extend some of my blessings to those who may be in need, for thanksgiving. This coming Monday, 11-24-2014, at 3:30 p.m; in the 5th ward, I and Mr. Shelton Banks, of Serenity Funeral Home will be giving away free turkeys, on a first come serve basis, at the Hispanic Tech Center, on the east side. 2101 Lewis Street, Flint, Michigan; there is only a limited supply. Also, Tuesday 11-25,2014, I will be giving away another set of free turkeys, at Doyle Ryder Elementary School, 1040 N. Saginaw Street, Flint, MI 48503, at 3:30 p.m; this will also be on a first come serve basis, due to the limited supply, for Monday and Tuesday. I would like to give a special thanks to Mr. Shelton Banks, of Serenity Funeral Home, for contributing to this good cause.

Great news! I am going to give a talk in Ann Arbor on Monday, January 19, 2015 (12-2 p.m, 1014 Tisch Hall, additional details TBA). I'll be joined by fellow University of Michigan alums Kidada Williams and LaKisha Simmons on a panel entitled, “The Color Line and the Long Twentieth Century: New Perspectives on Race, Violence, and Segregation.” This event will be part of the University of Michigan History Department's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observance. Lots of talk about Ferguson, Flint, and the politics of race in America. Mark your calendars, Michigan friends! All are welcome

Facebook family and friends, we are feeling the need to give once again to the less fortunate, for the Holiday season. This Friday, December 19, 2014, 5th Ward City Councilman and family will be issuing free turkeys, at Doyle Ryder Elementary School, 1040 N Saginaw St, Flint, MI 48503, at 5:15 pm. This give away is sponsored by Dado Party Store, on East Paterson and Saginaw Street, Landmark Food Market, and my dear best and childhood friend Mr. Jakafella Hudson and Sister Chloe, silent philanthropist, is how I view them. First come serve basis, until all are gone. We wish each and everyone of you a Happy Holiday.

5th Ward City Councilman Wantwaz Davis will be conducting a town hall meeting for all concerned residents, this Friday 24th of April, at 5:30 p.m., Doyle Ryder Elementary School, 1040 N. Saginaw Street, north of Rallies restaurant; the central ideal for the meeting is:

1). Inform the people about the quality of the water and what preventive measurements to take, while being exposed to the hazardous byproducts in the water, particularly TTHM (Trihalomethanes).

2). Discussion about proposal 1, tax increase that will be on the May 5, 2015 ballot, for fixtures of streets; which I am totally against.

3). Other crippling issues, and suggested solutions. This meeting is informative and all who are concerned about your living conditions should attend, there are a lot of people who are misinformed about this water and only through education and community meetings can we prevent any health hazards, especially for the children and elders who have a compromised immune system. Remember this meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m

Flint is becoming a Regional form of Government. The City of Flint 911 has been merged to Genesee County 911, 68th District Court is being merged to 67th District court, Detroit serving Flint water will become Karegoni, The City Charter is about to be revised that will possible include a proposed reduction of City Council from 9 to 7 or either 5, The Mayor will possible be a manager that will be hired by City Council and not the resident. Residents living in horrible neighborhoods are not voting due to lack of Good leadership with our elected officials. Genesee County Land Bank is the largest owner of vacant and abandon properties. The Urban Communities is the hardest hit when it comes to lack of economic development, high crime rates, lowest property values, highest car insurance, homeowners insurance, redlining, poor park improvements, and very very high unemployment rates. Black on Black crime is at a all time high, lack of quality and stable education is at a all time high in Urban communities by majority of our neighborhood school closings, teacher retirements, lay offs and just lack of Good home training from some of our parents. All kinds of drugs being sold in the streets, liquor stores on every other corner especially in distress neighborhoods. Police brutality all across this United states, Racially profiling our young children, and adults. We are in trouble if we don't come together and stand up for Democracy. Our Ancestors fought and died for us to vote, and have equal rights and we share responsibility to uphold that tradition. Ijs

Building Homes, Building Hope

Posted on May 14, 2015
Building Homes, Building Hope
As spring rolls in, residents all over the City are gearing up for home beautification and repair projects. However, with city-wide poverty levels far above the national average, many of our friends and neighbors are being forced to tighten their belts and forego these much needed home repairs. With our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, Genesee County Habitat for Humanity is working to bridge this gap by providing home repair services to qualifying homeowners in the City of Flint. Examples of repairs that will be covered through this program include roofing repair, siding replacement, wheelchair ramp construction, and interior systems repairs such as electric, plumbing, and heating.

As a pilot project to test the long-term sustainability of the program, 2015 repair projects will be limited to qualifying homeowners in Flint’s Civic Park, Grand Traverse District, and Mott Park neighborhoods, as well as homeowners in the Foss Ave. Neighborhood located east of I-475. In order to qualify for the program, residents must own and inhabit the property for which service is requested. They must also be up-to-date on all property taxes and insurance. Qualifying households must also make less than 80% of the city-wide median income.

An important component of Habitat’s mission is that repair services are provided in collaboration with partner families – not just given away. This model of sweat-equity is essential to the success and long-term sustainability of Habitat programs. As part of this model, participating households must contribute 3% of project cost and provide 8 hours of sweat-equity in support of the project (for example, a $6,000 project would require a $180 contribution and 8 hours of sweat-equity). Sweat-equity can take many forms and is accommodating of all ages and ability levels. For those who are able, sweat-equity could mean working hand-in-hand with repair crews. For those with less mobility, it could mean providing lunch or refreshments to repair crews. From cleaning up the worksite to volunteering at Habitat’s ReStore, there are limitless ways for partner families to put their sweat-equity into a project.

If you or anyone you know qualifies and would like to benefit from these services, please contact Genesee County Habitat for Humanity at (810)766-9089 ext. 206 or jzuniga@geneseehabitat.org. Don’t know if you qualify? Contact us, or come into our offices at 101 Burton St., Flint, MI 48503, and we will help guide you through the application process.

As a 2015-2017 National Affiliate of Distinction, Genesee County Habitat for Humanity seeks to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. As such, this program is just one facet of a much larger ministry that Habitat carries out within Flint and Genesee County, and it’s only through the support and tireless commitment of our community and family partners that we are able to successfully make this work possible. For more information about Genesee County Habitat for Humanity and the work that we do, visit our website at www.geneseehabitat.org or like us on Facebook.
