Authorities say Flint bar killing connected to Spanish Cobra gang

Joanna Bradburn, middle, is comforted as she grieves the loss of her son, Zachary Bradburn, during his vigil among family and friends in Flint on July 21, 2014. Bradburn, 24, was killed in a shooting at the Dawg House Bar in south Flint on July 20, 2014. "It just doesn't seem real", said his mother, as she talked about the life of her son. FLINT, MI -- Two Flint men have been arraigned on murder charges that authorities claim stem from their involvement with the Spanish Cobras gang.

Reco William Burch, 19, and Samuel Joel Burch, 31, were arraigned Thursday, Aug. 7, by Flint District Judge M. Catherine Dowd on charges of first-degree murder, gang membership and felony firearms. Samuel Burch is also charge with carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities say they believe the cousins are responsible for the shooting death of 24-year-old Zachary Scott Bradburn around 2:20 a.m. July 20 inside the Dawg House Bar, 4619 Fenton Road.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said authorities believe the killing was committed in furtherance of the gang, which has traditionally operated on the city's east side.

"We believe there's probable cause that they are associated with the Cobras," Leyton said of the cousins.

The prosecutor declined to comment on the motive behind the killing.

Nicholas Robinson, the attorney representing the men, denied they were involved with any gang.

"Samuel and Reco Burch are in no way connected to the Spanish Cobras or any other gang," Robinson said. "Although the loss of life is always unfortunate, we look forward to putting forth a vigorous defense on each and every charge once all of the facts come to the surface."

Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges and were ordered held without bond. They are scheduled to be back in court Aug. 12.

The Spanish Cobras controlled the streets on the city's east side with more than 200 members until being largely dismantled in the 1990s after its leaders were sentenced to life in prison following a high-profile bust by area law enforcement agencies.

A Flint man identified as an enforcer in the gang, Gary Fisher Jr., was recently sentenced to prison after he admitted to raping a woman outside of a shuttered Flint middle school and being involved in a stabbing attack of a member of the Gangster Disciples while in a Saginaw County prison.

Suspected members of the gang were also charged for the 2008 killing of 14-year-old George E. Green.

I hope they have more than a belief! Good gang intelligence would have been crucial. The language regarding in furtherance of the gang sound like it came fro a RICO case.

I wish they had designated the chest tattoo, When the media first indicated a gang connection, I looked at OTIS. My thoughts were Burch was a Vice Lord. Red and Black are Vice lord colors and VL is their name abbreviation.

It will be interesting to see how they tie in the Spanish Cobra connection. Spanish Cobras use green and black as their colors and SC for their name.

From the court records, it appears the home invasions took place in Fenton. Some co-defendants have suppressed records.

Girl testifies suspected Flint Spanish Cobras gang member was shot during bar killing

Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com

on September 03, 2014 at 6:30 PM, updated September 03, 2014 at 6:31 PM

FLINT, MI -- A 16-year-old girl testified that a suspect in an alleged gang-related killing came to her house after he was allegedly shot in the hand during the killing.

The girl testified Wednesday, Sept. 3, during a brief preliminary exam for Reco and Samuel Burch. The girl's hands were shackled during her testimony because she was in custody on a material witness warrant.

Reco William Burch, 19, and Samuel Joel Burch, 31, are charged with first-degree murder, gang membership and felony firearms for the 2:20 a.m. July 20 shooting of 24-year-old Zachary Scott Bradburn inside the Dawg House Bar, 4619 Fenton Road.

The girl, who was 15 at the time of the killing, said she was at the bar the night of the shooting, but she was outside the bar when she heard three gunshots.

The girl said she eventually went home after the incident and Reco Burch showed up at her house around 5 a.m. Reco Burch, who the girl said was a friend of her family, had an injured hand that her mother, a certified nursing assistant, helped bandage.

Reco Burch allegedly told the girl that he shot Bradburn, but he eventually recanted the story and said that Samuel Burch actually killed Bradburn, according to the girl.

Samuel Burch's attorney, Nicholas Robinson, objected to the girl's statement that his client killed Bradburn, an objection that Flint District Judge William H. Crawford upheld. Assistant Prosecutor Karen Hanson disagreed with Crawford's ruling and said she would file a brief seeking to have the statement admitted into the case.

The girl testified that Reco Burch told her Bradburn was attempting to purchase $800 of cocaine from Samuel Burch when he was shot.

Reco Burch allegedly slept at the girl's home and left the next morning.

Prosecutors granted the girl and her mother immunity in exchange for their testimony in the case.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has said authorities believe the killing was committed in furtherance of the Spanish Cobras gang, which has traditionally operated on the city's east side.

However, the girl said she was personally unaware of any gang affiliation the Burches have.

Robinson has denied the men had any association with the gang.

The preliminary exam is scheduled to continue Friday, Sept. 5.

Now the victim is a Spanish Cobra? How is that a furtherance of the gang?

Flint man testifies against cousin in alleged gang-related killing

Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com

on September 19, 2014 at 4:00 PM

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man facing charges stemming from a homicide at a south Flint bar testified it was his cousin, an accused Spanish Cobra gang member, who fired the fatal gunshots.

Reco William Burch, 19, testified Thursday, Sept. 18, that his cousin, Samuel Burch, fired the shots that killed 24-year-old Zachary Scott Bradburn around 2:20 a.m. July 20 inside the Dawg House Bar.

Both Burches are charged with first-degree murder, gang membership and felony firearms in Bradburn's death. Samuel Burch is also facing charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Reco Burch was sitting at the defense table when testimony began Sept. 3 in a preliminary exam against the two men. But, during Thursday's hearing, Reco Burch sat in the witness box across the courtroom from his cousin.

Reco Burch told the court that he agreed to testify against his cousin in hopes of receiving a plea agreement from prosecutors.

No plea agreement has been placed on the record in Reco Burch's case.

"We appreciate him testifying, but we have made no promises to him," Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said of Reco Burch.

Reco Burch testified that he and his cousin were at the Dawg House bar the night of the shooting. Reco Burch said he eventually went into the bathroom and saw Bradburn and his cousin having a conversation.

Bradburn then pulled a gun and pointed it at Reco Burch, according to testimony.

Reco Burch said he was shot in the hand by Brandburn when Samuel Burch pulled a gun of his own and shot Bradburn multiple times.

Reco Burch said he did not know what his cousin and Bradburn were discussing in the bathroom. However, a 16-year-old girl, whose house Reco Burch fled to after the shooting, testified Sept. 3 that Reco Burch told her Bradburn was attempting to purchase $800 worth of cocaine from Samuel Burch when he was shot.

Leyton has said authorities believe the killing was committed in furtherance of the Spanish Cobras gang, which has operated on the city's east side.

However, the girl said she was personally unaware of any gang affiliation the Burches might have.

Flint District Judge William Crawford, who was presiding over Thursday's preliminary exam, ordered all spectators out of the courtroom -- including media -- partway through Reco Burch's testimony after prosecutors and defense attorneys claimed they heard onlookers in the gallery talking during the hearing.

Reco Burch made no references to any gangs during his testimony.

Samuel Burch's attorney, Nicholas R. Robinson, said the hearing was adjourned after Crawford cleared the courtroom to allow Robinson to review Reco Burch's statement to authorities prior to cross examination.

Happened to be in the Grand Blanc area. On my way home I swung though the Amos Park area. While effort had been made to paint over the graffiti, there is a lot of new Cobra graffiti. I saw some Crip stuff but a lot more Crab (Crip) Killa graffiti,

Another street had "Flame Killa" graffiti.

So much for the effort to thwart gang graffiti.

There was a professional looking tribute to a fraternity on the rock (12th Street) today. It was marred by Insane Vice Lord (IVL) graffiti and their 5 pointed star in red.

Depressing drive today through the east side. More burnt houses an way more abandonment. Mostly Cobra graffiti. Lots of Death valley.

In the area off S Saginaw Street that was once marked as a battleground between the Madison Avenue Crips and the Lakeside Cobra set is once again showing some Cobra graffiti. Cut off by I-475 and Thread Lake, this area curves down to Flint Golf Club and the Circle Drive area. it too has burnt out homes and much demolition.

The north side of this area ends at a park like area. Entering this area is an overpass that usually has some form o graffiti. Now it is Cobra with the 4 sided diamond and the typical "Krab Killa" threat. What was unusual was the word "suicide" under the diamond. A tribute to the Marvel Suicide Squad?

Fenton Road after the viaduct shows a lot of disinvestment. The huge warehouse at Camden and Bloor is mostly gone. Much of the Blood graffiti there last year is gone, replaced by Cobra. Further south there is a random reference to he Vice lords. Not surprising when many years ago this was a Vice lord area.

There is an oddity in the area. The Cobra diamond is usually associated with the number four. (3 for the letter C) This is the first time I have seen stacked diamonds associated with the number 7. But then graffiti is constantly evolving.

2 blocks north of Kettering at Joliet and woodbridge there is lots of gang graffiti between the two buildings there. They openly proclaim they are Death Valley Cobra. There is also a Gangster Disciple connection. Sadly they are proclaiming they want to kill Insane Vice lords (IVL).

The area East off Fenton Road, south of the viaduct after 12th , is a "hot mess" of gang graffiti. Whenever gangs begin crossing off another gangs graffiti and replacing it with their own and threats, there is a potential for violence.

Lexington and Brunswick- No Snitch Zone with the o in zone replaced with a Cobra Diamond.

Paddington and Cambden- It almost seems like every gang that ever hit the south side is hitting this house. Cobra, South Side Blood, Crip, and many more.

Ossington and Cambden- scary gang stuff. Is that really a swaztika in the middle of their 6 pointed star. No wonder they call themselves the South Side Maniacs.

Every side of both houses is hit. Other houses have been hit and some covered. The number 7 is everywhere. Is that referring to the stacked diamonds with the #7 ?

Cambden and Ossington-went back because first time I was under surveillance.
This is a bigger mess than I first thought. It appears they are claiming to maniac Latin Disciples. (MLD)(13-12-4) Too much grafitti to quickly assimilate and on at least three sides of the house. The grafitti is growing in this small area.

Cobra signs are defaced. The swastikas are not on the 6 pointed stars but are on the winged hearts with devil horns and and tails. (The number 5 also)

Gone maniac with a 6 pointed star as the letter o (letter G in the middle) and 2 forks up. This group states they are are the Flint Chapter, but i have my doubts. Some of the grafitti is choppy and not well formed (kids?).

Then there is the South Side, South Side Maniac and Flint Town Maniac. using 6 ponted stars for some vowels. Trouble D with a 6 pointed star. Of course they want to kill Bloods (2-11) (BK).

Strange mixture of the numbers 6 and 5 together. The East Side once had a gang calling themselves FTM (Flint Town Mafia some said) They were allegedly a mixed Gangster Disciple and Blood combination from the area around MLKing and 9th.

Paddington and Cambden-South Side Blood Gang is crossed off as was one Chico.A newer Chico with the Blood cry Sswoowoo (sp) and a broken 6 point star has been added.
Front of house had the "5 popping-6 dropping and a 5 point star. (People killing Folks)

Stop snitching along with Get money and Krab Killer (Crip Killer) They hit every side of this house and the neighbor had to paint the grafitti off hiis house.

The west side of the viaduct south of 12th and Grand Traverse has KU NI**A in gold paint.
