A new session of TeenQuest, which helps students in Flint and Genesee County prepare for success through learning business skills, begins on Sept. 15.

FLINT, MI – A five-week training course designed to prepare county youth for success is planning its starting session this semester next week.

The TeenQuest pre-employment leadership program offers training at five locations during the fall, beginning on Monday, Sept. 15.

Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15 from youth ages 14 to 18 and ninth grade through 12th, for this first session of four scheduled for the 2014-15 school year at these locations and times:
•Baker Career Academy, 4-6 p.m.
•Atherton High School, 2:45-4:45 p.m.
•Cathedral of Faith, 4-6 p.m.
•International Academy of Flint, 4-6 p.m.
•Southwestern Academy, 2:45-4:45 p.m.

Students must also commit to attending the TeenQuest program two hours a day after school from Monday through Thursday during the five weeks.

"It's never too early to start planning for summer jobs," said Rhetta Hunyady, vice president of Education and Training, Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, in a release. "TeenQuest is the first step toward employment. In only five weeks, we get teens workforce-ready and full of confidence. We're excited to kick off the new school year with this fall session."

The program focuses on teaching students the basics of teamwork, business etiquette, work ethics, communication, goal setting and conflict resolution.

The first 2014-15 session runs through Oct. 16. Other sessions are:
•Nov. 3-Dec. 4, 2014
•Jan. 12-Feb. 12, 2015
•Feb. 23-March 26, 2015

The program is a prerequisite for employment through the Summer Youth Initiative, which matches hundreds of TeenQuest graduates for summer employment. Those that hire the graduates have 50 to 100 percent of costs subsidized.

This summer, 617 students were employed through the Summer Youth Initiative, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Workforce Investment Act and some for-profit businesses.

For more information about TeenQuest, contact Hunyady at rhunyady@flintandgenesee.org or (810) 600-1412.

All students, regardless of grades and test scores, are encouraged to attend.

Some of the colleges that will be there include:

FLINT, MI -- Crime Stoppers is offering up to $2,500 for information on the killing of 49-year-old Emziah Sudberry Jr.

Sudberry was killed Jan. 10, 2013, in the 3600 block of Sterling Street on the city's north side.

Crime Stoppers announced the cash reward Friday, Sept. 12.

Sudberry was found dead in the street around 12:40 a.m. from multiple gunshot wounds.

"He was just about everybody's handy man who, even with his limited ability, was determined to get the job done," his father, Emziah Sudberry Sr., previously told The Flint Journal.

He said his son did not live in the area where he was killed, but grew up there. He's not sure what his son was doing in the area at the time of his death.

"It immediately sent me going back through my mind about possibly who (did this) and why," he said. "I didn't come up with anything. It kind of makes me angry."

Economic summit aimed at Flint's north-side small business owners, neighborhood redevelopment

FLINT, MI – Those looking to improve their small business, start their own enterprise or learn about neighborhood development may want to attend the North Flint Reinvestment Corporation’s economic empowerment summit.

The fourth annual summit takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Foss Avenue Baptist Church, 1159 E. Foss Ave.

Cost for the event is $25 and features breakfast, lunch, workshop materials and a gift bag.

The theme for the summit is the “Empowering families and neighborhoods through micro business enterprise and resident engagement” and will feature Ian Beriston of the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation.

Reginald Flynn, president of the North Flint Reinvestment Corp. and pastor at Foss Avenue Baptist, said he visited Youngstown a couple of months ago during a trip with a contingent of Flint officials.

“They’re going into very distressed areas and having success,” Flynn said of Youngstown’s development staff. “I see a lot of similarities with Youngstown and the city of Flint.

“(Beriston) has a level of expertise in neighborhood development that is phenomenal and we’re looking to replicate that.”

Flynn hopes to attract 300 people to the event.

There will be seven different workshops available and the one hosted by FirstMerit Bank’s Lysa Davis on the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 should be especially useful to black and Hispanic business owners and entrepreneurs, Flynn said.

The act, he said, ensure that financial institutions provide capital and financial services to low-income communities where they operate.

“This year’s summit is extremely important, with so many residents desiring to see our neighborhoods developed,” Flynn said. “What we’re excited about is what transpired in Civic Park and we’re hoping to see similar developments in other neighborhoods.”

Flynn was referring to last week’s announcement that $2.6 million in federal funds will be used to knock down 225 blighted homes in one of the nation’s first subdivisions.

Kroger stores statewide part of Oct. 4 hiring event

Looking for a job?

Kroger stores are participating in a statewide hiring event on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"The drive to hire is based on immediate need, and these positions are not seasonal or temporary," said spokesman Ken McClure. "Kroger is committed to improving and enhancing the shopping experience for our consumers, and adding friendly, dedicated people to our stores is at the epicenter of that effort. The Kroger Co. of Michigan is a great place to work, and although we have over 17,000 wonderful associates currently in Michigan, we are in need of more."

All Michigan stores are participating, McClure said.

Kroger has 11 Genesee County stores. The company took some heat in July for closing its Pierson Road store in Flint, one of the last grocery stores in the city.

"Kroger seeks enthusiastic, friendly people who must be available for nights and weekends," Jayne Homco, president of Kroger's Michigan division, in a news release. "Our associates enjoy highly competitive wages along with in-store discounts, price breaks on products and programs outside of Kroger, training opportunities and contests."

People interested in applying for jobs should visit www.Kroger.com/careers and complete an online application before visiting on Saturday.

"We have an ongoing goal to provide customers the highest level of service possible and want to hire individuals who will commit to helping us reach that goal," Homco said. "Our associates enjoy working for the largest traditional grocery retailer in the nation. They also have a sense of permanency that is inherent to a company that has operated in Michigan for more than 100 years."

Flint councilman, consortium plan news conference calling for immediate removal of emergency manager

FLINT, MI -- A Flint city councilman along with the Change Agent Consortium will hold a news conference Monday for the immediate removal of emergency manager Darnell Earley.

The news conference will be held on Monday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1401 East Stewart Avenue in Flint.

Flint City Councilman Sheldon Neely will be joined by Change Agent Consortium National Spokesperson The Rev. David Alexander Bullock, Bishop Bernadel Jefferson from the Faith Deliverance Center Church, and The Rev. Dr. Lewis Randolph from the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. A.C. Dumas the former president of the Flint NAACP and a radio host will also be at the news conference, as well as other community activists and concerned citizens.

Flint has had an emergency manager for more than 18 months, and according to the state's emergency management law P.A. 436, the group contends, local elected bodies can oust emergency managers after 18 months in office.

On Sept. 25, the Detroit city council voted to remove their emergency manager Kevyn Orr.

"It is time for democracy to be restored in the city of Flint. Flint should no longer be a place that suppresses democracy and the franchise. Emergency management is antidemocratic and ineffective. The EM must go now," Bullock said in a statement.

The Changing Gears Summit: New Pathways for Returning Citizens (Ex-Offenders) & Their Families/Community event was held Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Second Chance Church. The event was held for ex-offenders to help with information regarding jobs, reuniting with family, support services, entrepreneurship, mental health, substance abuse help, and mentor matching.

Amanda Emery | MLive.com

FLINT, MI – In most cases people do the crime, then do the time, but the transition afterward isn't easy.

The Changing Gears Summit: New Pathways for Returning Citizens (Ex-Offenders) & Their Families/Community event was held Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Second Chance Church, located at 1950 Burr Boulevard in Flint.

The event was organized by a grassroots team of people who have an interest in and passion for helping ex-offenders return to the community and their families, said Barb McGhan, one of the organizers.

McGhan said many people come out of the penal system and don't know their way around and aren't familiar with the resources that are available to them. She said those who participate in the Michigan Prison Re-Entry Initiative (MPRI) program have a leg up on others, so this event is to reach out and offer help to those struggling to re-adjust to life outside of the system.

"What we wanted to do was assemble ex-offenders and family members and get them some help, connect them with resources that they might not know about otherwise, and give them some hope," McGhan said. "We would like for this to be the beginning of something that turns into something that is much bigger and much broader."

The event had information available regarding jobs, reuniting with family, support services, entrepreneurship, mental health, substance abuse help, and mentor matching.

Bobby Simbler works with several organizations in the Flint community, including WOW Outreach Action, Neighborhoods Without Boundaries and Church Without Walls. Simbler also serves as a mentor to ex-offenders, as it is a path he is all too familiar with.

Simbler spent 21 years and 4 months in prison for murder. Simbler said he went to prison when he was 27 years old and was released in 2013. He said he was disheartened and shocked when he came out.

"It was different, it was a shock. Before I got out, the lady at MPRI told me I was going to be upset with what has happened in my community. I kept wondering what she meant, because I hadn't been out here," Simbler said. "But then when I got out, I was devastated. All the people that were here were gone, all the homes have had the copper taken out, guys walking around with their pants around their thighs. Just the mentality of our society is lost. So I was devastated, and I am still taken aback by it and frustrated by it."

The devastation and frustration turned into determination to help people coming out of prison, Simbler said. He spent time getting comfortable with his surroundings and adapting to life outside. He works at the job he got through MPRI, where he said he has already been promoted six times.

"My philosophy on that is the same thing that I apply to myself. I had to change the way that I thought, so that I could make a better me. When I bettered myself, then I felt like I could help someone else," Simbler said. "Doing the same thing and expecting different consequences, it just doesn't work that way, and that's my philosophy."

Simbler said Saturday's event is important for ex-offenders so they know there is a support system in place to help them, and so they know they aren't alone.

"At least then a person will know that they aren't going through it alone." Simbler said. "At events like this, they can come together face-to-face and chat with someone who is going through the same thing they are going through and get information from a booth or a vendor that can help."

This is the first summit the group has put together. McGhan said the plan is to hold more in the future.
