Two plead guilty to torching homes near downtown Flint

FLINT, MI – Two men pleaded guilty on Monday to two 10-year felonies for setting fire to buildings near downtown Flint.
James R. Strempel, 33, and Robert L. Williams, 21, pleaded guilty to arson of real property, according to court records.
Flint Police Sgt. David Bigelow said police believe the two torched as many as 30 buildings near downtown over three years.
Williams was arrested in August when police caught him allegedly breaking into Atwood Stadium in Flint after a security guard at Atwood called police when he saw three men inside the stadium gates.
An officer who arrested the men saw six porta-johns on the south end of the stadium engulfed in flames, he said.
Williams later allegedly admitted to the six other fires, police said. Other fires were also located near downtown Flint, including homes on Asylum, Stone and North Grand Traverse. He also is alleged to have set the vacant Garfield Elementary School at 301 E. McClellan Street on fire. Garfield was heavily damaged.
The arrest led police to Strempel, Bigelow said. Police believe Strempel and Williams worked together setting the fires throughout the city. Police were investigating Williams before his arrest after a tip came in on the tip line. Anyone with information on arson is asked to call 1-800-44-ARSON. Information leading to an arrest could result in a cash reward.
As part of the agreement, the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office will not seek habitual offender status on both men and other arson charges were dismissed. Strempel also must testify truthfully against Williams, court records say.
A sentencing date has not yet been set. |
