Grand Blanc Township businessman Ken Thomas running for 51st District state House

ARGENTINE TOWNSHIP, MI – A Grand Blanc Township business owner and Argentine Township resident will be going up against State Rep. Joseph Graves during the November elections.
Ken Thomas, co-owner of Thomas Appliances in Grand Blanc Township since 1994, announced his campaign to run for state representative of the 51st District as a Democratic candidate.
The filing deadline to run for a state representative or state senator is April 22. Primary elections take place Aug. 5 and the general election is set for Nov. 4.
Thomas will officially announced his campaign at 3 p.m. Friday, March 28, at the Holly Hotel,110 Battle Alley in Holly.
Thomas, a lifelong resident of Genesee County, grew up in Davison and graduated from Flint Powers Catholic High School in 1985.
He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1989. He stayed at EMU for his Masters in Clinical Behavioral Psychology, which he received in 1991.
Thomas, 47, has been married with his wife, Cheryl, for 21 years and they have two sons, Kenneth, 14, and Christian, 12.
Graves, R-Argentine Township, is also gearing up for his re-election campaign. Graves was first elected in a February 2012 special election to replace recalled state Rep. Paul Scott.
Graves filed with the state Monday, March 4, to appear on the August primary election ballot.
"Our state has made great strides fixing Michigan's economy and addressing crime in our communities. Over the past four years, 220,000 new private-sector jobs have been created and violent crime is down 26 percent in the city of Flint," Graves said in a written statement. "I am excited to be a part of Michigan's turnaround and I remain committed to fighting for jobs and public safety.
"There is a lot of work left to do and I look forward to continuing my work on these issues. I will continue to work hard to earn voters trust once again."
All state representative and state senator positions will be up for election during the November general election.
The 51st District includes parts of Genesee County and Oakland County, including Argentine, Atlas, Fenton, Flushing and Gaines townships and the cities of Linden and Fenton. Within Oakland County, Graves represents the townships of Groveland, Holly and Rose.
Thomas said he will be running for five reasons:
•Restore funding to schools so our children can prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.
•Roll back tax increases on middle-class families and seniors.
•Bring back funding for police and fire services.
•Support small-business owners and help them create jobs.
•Protect our natural resources so that future generations can enjoy our lakes, rivers and forests.
