More city funds keep paying for the Smith Village debacle. An informed source says HUD would have accepted a lesser plan, but Eason insisted on the current plan. Don't forget, the City must still build an early childhood development building and a Center for the Performing Arts. The Swartz Creek Center for the arts attached to their school cost over 15 million. |

Actually there was no "lesser" plan. There were ideas being passed around which would have allowed for several multi unit structures (duplex 7 quads) which people "in the process" thought would make the development cheaper and quicker. It didnt pan out because a report from Rowe claimed it would run about the same. Mott Foundation and Uptown like the idea and was pushing for it. Late timing wouldn't really allow for it to be considered by HUD. They neighborhood will be Uptowns soon enough so they should have submitted to HUD anyway. You can go to Uptowns website and download the real downtown Flint Masterplan they created in 2003. Smith Village may take the place of the "New East Neighborhood". The Farmers market move is in there also.

Expect this money pit to cost taxpayers even more money.
Nancy Jurkiewicz-Rich and John Carpenter had an agreement with HUD that would have eliminated the potential deficit.
There was a determination that it was foolish to build more houses at this time. But before that Carolyn Sims and the Smith Village CDC rejected every deal proposed. Land owners in that area wanted top dollar for their lands. |

This was the meeting in which Walling described how Flint needed to build 500 new houses to meet the needs of the anticipated population influx. He claimed he based this number on a MSHDA survey. I believe he also once stated this was a downtown group survey. All of this speculation was based on the projections of new employees coming to downtown. There was also an effort to recruit affluent empty nesters and young professionals to live in downtown.
MAYORAL DEBATE ON OCTOBER 19TH
The East Side Business Association will host a debate between Mayor Dayne Walling and Darryl Buchanan at St. Andrews Episcopal Church from noon to 1pm on October 19th. The debate is open to the public. Spend your lunch hour with the candidates as they share their visions for the future of Flint and show your support for Mayor Walling by wearing your Vote Walling t-shirts. We hope to see you there.
