FLINT, MI -- A woman was repaid for her kindness with an assault and robbery after she let a friend stay the night, according to a police report.
The woman told police she let the man stay the night at her home in the 1000 block of Barney Avenue. She said the man came back to her home a few hours later on Sunday, Jan. 12, around 1 p.m. and began shoving, punching, and choking her.

According to the report, the man broke the victim's 27 inch TV, and then ransacked her home. The suspect also took $200 in cash from the woman.

Police said the woman had swelling to her eye.

The report was made as record only at this time.

Flint police chief 'appalled' by hold-up of elderly woman at home

David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
on January 15, 2014 at 4:00 PM, updated January 15, 2014 at 5:40 PM

FLINT, MI – Police Chief James Tolbert said he is "appalled" that a 79-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint at her own home.

Police were called around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday to a home on Mohawk Avenue near Dort Highway for a home invasion.

Three teens -- two 17 and one 15 -- allegedly broke into her home and demanded her car keys, before making off with cash, personal items and electronics, according to Tolbert.

The trio was arrested a short time later a couple of blocks away, police said.

"Anyone who's going to prey on a 79-year-old I find reprehensible," Tolbert said. "Not only as a police officer but as a son, I'm appalled. Everyone should be appalled."

The woman was not hurt, police said.

Because Flint police were tied up on a call of a shooting of a 16-year-old girl, Michigan State Police responded to the call. A canine unit tracked the suspects that led to the arrest, police said.

"This is a perfect example of why we have a cooperative effort with the state police," said Tolbert. "It shows you exactly why we need those officers."

The suspects have not yet been charged and the case remains under investigation, Tolbert said. The woman could not be reached for comment.

Tolbert said it's not clear if the woman was targeted because of her age, but said it's not unusual for that to be a factor in these types of cases.

MSP Lt. Brian Cole said most criminals don't care who they hurt.

"They don't consider the victim, they just consider the gain," he said.

Neighbor Anthony Blakemore, 39, said he didn't hear about the incident, but did see police in the area. He said the neighborhood where he grew up has deteriorated over the years.

"It doesn't surprise me," he said. "It's a sad state of affairs in Flint."

Home break-ins growing in Clayton Township

Posted: Jan 15, 2014 6:48 PM EST

Updated: Jan 15, 2014 6:52 PM EST

by Siobhan Riley - email

CLAYTON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -
(01/15/14) - A warning from police in Genesee County's Clayton Township - keep your eyes open as the area deals with a string of break-ins.

The thefts are happening in the middle of the day and police say the number is growing.

Police say the criminals are kicking in doors of homes and taking electronics, cash and jewelry.

The police chief says this is one of their biggest problems that they have been faced with in Clayton Township.

There have already been two break-ins this month. Police and people who live here say that's too many for a small community. The most recent break in was on Lennon Road, when someone broke into a home Tuesday during the day.

"I don't know where they're coming from. If it's people coming from different areas into this area and doing it, but usually this is a very peaceful neighborhood," said Gary Gaines, who lives in Clayton Township.

Police are still investigating 53 break-ins from last year. They say it's possible that some of the cases are related.

Clayton Township Police chief, Scott Pavlik, says the thieves are stealing belongings and selling them at pawn shops across the county. There has been talk about keeping track of what's being sold at local pawn shops in order to prevent more problems down the road.

"With that, I'll be able to electronically from my computer. For example, there's three companies that have management systems that are specifically targeted toward second hand stores. That way if someone in Davison sells something in Flint, I can know about it. You can run it by name, business and so forth and that way we'll be able to track some of this stuff that's being stolen," he said.

Police are asking people in the community to keep an eye out for their neighbors and to call 911 if they see something that looks suspicious.

"The other thing that I noticed was a little bit strange about Clayton Township, because I've been here a year, is that I have not in a year gotten a home invasion in progress call where someone who was actually a neighbor saw someone go into a house. Part of that is because it's rural. So I'm trying to urge neighbors to be more vigilant and look out for their neighbors. They know better than anybody who belongs in that house and if you see somebody in the middle of the day carrying stuff out the house, I would encourage them to call police so we can check it out," Pavlik said.

The chief says they're averaging about one home invasion a month. They have a few suspects they're looking at.

The 53 break-ins from last year is more than one per month. I believe they captured a ring last year of individuals mostly from Flint.

Pawn shops in Genesee County may have to enter items into online database so police can track stolen goods

David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
on January 18, 2014 at 6:00 AM, updated January 18, 2014 at 6:06 AM

GENESEE COUNTY, MI – Area police chiefs are pushing a plan to have pawn shops, scrap dealers and others that deal in second-hand goods to record their transactions in an online database so police can track stolen items.

Pawn shops and other second-hand businesses already are required to obtain information from the people they buy items from. But the data is not in a centralized location that a database would provide. Within 24 hours, police would be able to locate a stolen item on a database.

Flint Police Chief James Tolbert and Attorney Pete Bade said on Friday, Jan. 17, the plan is being considered. They said an ordinance would have to be established to make the businesses comply.

"We (police chiefs) are all in agreement that something needs to be done," said Tolbert. "We will see a regional approach that will have a significant impact on burglaries in the area."

Flint Township Police Chief George Sippert said talk of the database has become more serious over the last couple of months among the police chiefs in Genesee County. He said the chiefs have highlighted three websites that they might use.

Some sites collect thumbprints and photographs of the person and the item, Sippert said.

Sippert said he hopes Flint will choose a site and other county departments would follow suit. He said 25 to 35 businesses would be affected by the proposal. Tolbert declined to go into detail about the plan other to say that it was under consideration.

"We are having a burglary problem here in Genesee County," Sippert said. "More often than not, it's the same person or people breaking into homes until they get caught. This would speed along that process (of arresting people), which would in turn decrease the amount of burglaries and return the items to the owners."

But the plan may get some push back from pawn shops. According to the National Pawnbrokers Association, some are concerned about the information being passed along to a third party.

"Pawnbrokers are concerned what happens to that data," said association spokesman Emmett Murphy.

The data could be sold to credit agencies or potential employers, said Murphy.

"We're concerned because it is such a gray area, it hasn't been tested and we don't know where that data is going," he said,

Clayton Township has seen a string of burglaries in which thieves are kicking in doors during the daytime.

Clayton Township Police Chief Scott Pavlik said the burglaries have been occurring in the 10000 block of Lennon Road. Pavlik said the thieves are stealing cash, jewelry and electronics, much of which ends up in pawn shops, making it hard to track without a database.

"Now, you have to physically go to the pawn shop to see if the item is there," he said.

Pavlik said a similar database is used in Oakland County. Grand Blanc Township has approved an ordinance last fall to require businesses to put transactions online, said Grand Blanc Township Chief David Stamm.

Tolbert said reducing the number of burglaries goes a long way in improving the quality of life in the city.

"If people aren't safe in their homes, if people are being victims of burglaries, that's what causes people to leave the city," he said.

One pawn shop, Golden Tree pawn shop on Dort Highway near Court Street in Flint already puts its transactions online.

"It's all about the safety," said Matt White, manager. "If we didn't do it that way, it could hurt our liability (if it has stolen items)."
