Does Detroit have a gang problem? Depends on who you ask

DETROIT (WJBK) -
Citizens, police and city officials are at odds in Detroit over whether there's a gang problem and it all depends on who you ask.
Dozens of residents turned out Thursday night to share their concerns with the Detroit Police Commission. The meeting comes as the city looks at restructuring the police department, including the elimination of the gang squad.
"We need our gang squad because if you get rid of them, all hell's gonna break loose come sometime," said one citizen during the meeting at East English Village Preparatory Academy. "You know that and I know that."
In a recent survey of 250 Detroit Public School students, 80 percent admitted to being in a gang and knowing someone who was in a gang.
"We don't have the gang problem that we would have in a city like L.A. or some of the west coast gangs," said Detroit Board of Police Commission Chair Rev. Jerome Warfield.
Students at Denby High School are circulating a petition right now aimed at keeping the gang squad. So far, they've collected 400 signatures.
What do you think? Does the city have a gang problem?

The same could be said of Flint. Only the south and west sides of Chicago have serious gang issues and violence. The College Cultural area and downtown have very little gang issues and violence. |

i was present at the meeting of the Land bank board when they approved the sale of these lots to Foss Avenue for $100 each. It was also mentioned that even nonprofits and churches were being assessed the street lighting fee. Obviously Foss Avenue Baptist Church did not make allowances for this assessment as the records indicate they have not paid the special fee and owe $67.26 per lot. This must be paid in full before March 1st when past due taxes to the county.
In the sense of fairness, it takes over 2 weeks for the city to catch up on the posting of taxes paid. i wonder if this tardiness will delay the transfer of the unpaid taxes to the county.
Foss Avenue has their own agenda. These properties were to be the beginning of a new "village" on saginaw Street, much like the village in Beecher. Since the Beecher enterprise is mostly a failed project, one has to wonder why anyone would want to replicate it. Charles Young is expected to be a partner in the venture.

Dayne Walling tweets three days ago that he is meeting with the Genesee regional Chamber of Commerce to determine how to run the City. I wonder if the advisory group ordered by Snyder when Brown was in charge is still active, Tim Herman was named to the financial position.
A shadow government is a unelected group that is the real power behing the elected group. The Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce is apparently one of those shadow groups.

For the next Council election the public needs to seriously look at the people behind the candidate.
Sisters United, a 501(C)4 social group broke the law when they supported council candidates and Walling. They even participated in Public Access shows for Walling.
The former Smith Village Citizens District Council president openly endorsed a mayoral candidate. |

Gangs have bragged about how much money they have earned in elections by working the absentee ballots. I understand some gangs were angry that someone even questioned their influence on the city. |
