The city of Flint says it will sue some current and former City Council members if they don't pay up.

The case comes from retro-active pay council members gave themselves last year.
Seven members of the previous council are being told to pay back around $185,000 they awarded themselves following the end of a state takeover in 2004.

These seven members now face a two-week deadline to pay back this money.

Refusal to make some sort of payment arrangements will result in a lawsuit, according to City Attorney Trachelle Young.

The council voted to restore pay and benefits cut when the state took over the city's finances in 2002.

Attorney General Mike Cox later sued, arguing that council violated a state constitutional provision that bars retroactive pay for public officials.

The state Court of Appeals last week upheld an Ingham County judge's order that the money must be repaid.

Two members of the previous City Council did not take the pay raise - Matt Slinker and Lawrence Murphy.

Here's a list of who owes the money:

Peggy Cook, who received payment as a former City Council member. You may recall, she gave up her seat to become City Administrator. Also owing money is Council President Darryl Buchanan, 5th Ward Councilwoman Carolyn Sims, 9th Ward Councilman Scott Kincaid and former City Council members Ed Taylor, Johnnie Coleman and Mark Horrigan.

Loyst Fletcher, who has represented current and former officials, said on Monday that he plans to appeal the case to the state Supreme Court.

But Fletcher has now reportedly been dismissed by the Council, leaving them without representation for the time-being.
