The Flint City Council, in a 6-3 vote Monday, opted to pay more than $130,000 in fees and no-bid contracts the previous council and the mayor fought over.

The funds include about $53,000 in no-bid contracts Mayor Don Williamson ordered for mowing and trimming, the removal of tree limbs and shrubs, and demolition. About $8,500 was for a no-bid contract the council ordered for videotaping meetings.

Some members said the new council needs to start off with a clean slate, while others said the no-bid contracts were against the charter and shouldn't be paid.

The council also voted to pay the legal fees of its current attorney, with whom the council opted to sever ties in a narrow 5-4 vote.

Loyst Fletcher would have represented the council in its three remaining legal cases, but some members said the new council needs to start off with a clean slate.

Council President Darryl E. Buchanan said the move had nothing to do with Fletcher's abilities, and the current cases are not so complex that a "fresh face" couldn't pick up where he left off.

But 6th Ward Councilman Sheldon A. Neeley said it is improper to replace him due to the ongoing council litigation.

Now the council must meet to appoint a new attorney.

isn't an attorney kind of important? Why not find a replacement first?

What bugs me is the paying out of Non Bid contracts. By the Mayor and also the former city council. The attorney fiasco (I believe) is another attempt by Don and his Cronies to create more confusion to draw attention away from what he has or is doing. Already the Council has been rubber stamping his proposals without any real dicussion. When ever a legitamate concern is brought up. The rubber stamp brigaed ignores it, Coleman annouces "well I'm voting for it "and it get's passed. And don't let that 6-3 vote confuse anybody. I doubt this council will ever have enough votes to conter any charter violation of the mayor's office when it is proposed. It will always be rubber stamped by the majority.
