Flint City Council President Johnnie Coleman owes much more than an apology for recently calling a local television newsman "a faggot." He needs to stop making such vulgar and immature outbursts - for which he is too prone - no matter how provoked he feels.

Wherever Coleman might have learned such conduct is acceptable we can't begin to imagine. Such reprehensible speech not only is an inexcusable slur on the gay community, but demonstrates a complete disregard for how much such an ignorant comment hurts the image of city government and Flint as a whole.

What makes this incident disappointing, too, is that Coleman is neither stupid nor uncaring about his official duties. But too often his temper causes him trouble. As he faces a re-election battle this fall, voters must compare his overall suitability for office with that of his opponent. In our mind, even with his flaws, Coleman has more potential to help steer the city in the right direction, and we stand by our endorsement of him.

Sadly, coarse and intemperate language has been too common at Flint City Hall over the years. For the good of the city, it has to end - and not just the extreme kind of offense for which Coleman is guilty, but all uncivil discourse that should bring universal rebuke.
