The Flint City Council on Thursday rejected Mayor Don Williamson's request for a special meeting today to discuss funding of the city's law department.

Williamson had scheduled a council meeting for noon today to address what he deemed an emergency caused by insufficient funding of the law department.

City Council attorney Loyst Fletcher sent Williamson a letter Thursday telling him that council members wouldn't be available today and suggested rescheduling it for Wednesday.

Second Ward Councilman Ed Taylor said the mayor is grandstanding and that any discussions about law department funding can wait until next week.

"It's the mayor's prerogative if he wants to show up," Taylor said.

But Williamson said today's meeting would proceed as planned even if the council didn't show.

"Our attorneys will be there," Williamson said.

Former Genesee County Prosecutor Arthur A. Busch said council members could face 90 days in jail and a $500 fine if they weren't at today's meeting.

"You're elected to take care of the business, not run away from it," said Busch, who is advising Williamson on the matter.
