For more than a week, there had been speculation at City Hall that Williamson would veto the budget, but early Wednesday he announced he was not going to do that.

The mayor stresses that he doesn't like the budget, but says it may be the best he can get from the current council.

The mayor is accepting the line-item budget adopted by the council more than a week ago, even though he says the budget is not in the best interest of the city.

Because it's a line-item budget, the council will set the budgets for city departments. Every time more money is needed, the mayor will have to go council to get their approval.

The mayor says the budget has forced the layoffs of 23 people, including his 10 appointees. The mayor also says the council is putting the city on the fast track of going belly up.

"I think you have a City Council that thinks that you have a strong mayor form of government and if they keep up doing what they are doing, this city will be in bankruptcy."

City Attorney Trachelle Young says she still has concerns about the legality of the line-item budget, and she may take those concerns to court. Meanwhile, the layoffs will take effect July 1.
