Eric Mays has resubmitted petition language to force a recall election against Mayor Don Williamson.

Thursday's move was expected after the Genesee County clerk's office announced last week that Mays failed to submit enough valid signatures after reviews invalidated more than 1,300 signatures.

The Genesee County Election Commission is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. June 28 to consider the language's clarity, according to the county clerk's office.

If the wording is approved, Mays will get six months to collect at least 7,250 valid signatures.

The language is mostly unchanged. Mays dropped a reason accusing the mayor of not following the current year's budget. He added a new one that alleges Williamson used his office for personal gain over his plan to bring a casino project to a site his company owns in Mt. Morris Township instead of in Flint.

Williamson has denied any wrongdoing, saying his casino plan is the best option to bring gaming to the area.

Mays, a former Williamson supporter, first took out petitions in November that accused the mayor of tarnishing the city's image with personal attacks against opponents and refusing to pay vendors.

Williamson has defended his record, saying he has served residents well. He also has said he is not concerned about the effort, and he believes he would win easily if a vote were held.

Mayoral supporters contend Mays' initial failure shows the community isn't supportive of a recall
