It appears to be only a matter of time before officials announce that Eric Mays failed to get enough signatures to force a recall election against Mayor Don Williamson.

The Genesee County clerk's office has preliminarily thrown out 1,127 of the 8,588 signatures collected by Mays after completing its review Wednesday, leaving only 211 more than needed to force an election. That amount likely won't be enough after Flint City Clerk Inez M. Brown conducts a more comprehensive review of signatures, County Clerk Michael Carr said.

"I would be shocked if he makes it, but stranger things have happened," Carr said.

But Mays said he's happy the effort is still alive. While he conceded his effort likely will fail, he said he's ready to start the petition process all over again if necessary.

"We'll resubmit and do the November ballot," Mays said Wednesday. "Everyone who signed can re-sign. "We are determined."

Williamson said Wednesday that people can do what they want, but he's going to remain focused on his job serving residents, which includes fixing streets and knocking down dilapidated homes. He said hasn't paid much attention to Mays' effort.

"I could care less," he said.

Carr said his office likely will turn over the petitions to Brown on Tuesday to give his staff members time to recheck their work. One recheck already revealed six additional signatures that weren't initially counted. Once Brown gets the signatures, she will have 15 days to conduct her review.

Mays, who needs at least 7,250 valid signatures to force an election, says if he has to circulate petitions again, his new goal will be 12,000 to 14,000 - a large enough cushion to cover invalid signatures.

In a new effort, Mays, a former Williamson supporter, said he will spend all his time collecting signatures. In the ongoing effort, Mays spent several months trying to convince the mayor to change his ways. He also said he plans to change collection methods to avoid some of the mistakes that invalidated signatures this time.

In November, Mays filed petition language accusing the mayor of tarnishing the city's image with personal attacks against opponents and fights with the City Council over the budget.

But in a new effort, Mays said he plans to add language to include Williamson's private business decision to seek putting a casino on land his company owns in Mt. Morris Township. Mays said Williamson is using the mayor's office to keep a similar deal from happening in Flint.

Williamson has denied that allegation, saying his proposal is the only viable one to remain.
