With winter also comes the high cost of heating your home. For thousands here in mid-Michigan, keeping the heat on is quite a challenge as they struggle to make ends meet.

But help is available.

The Genesee County Community Action Resource Department, or G-card for short, has provided a helping hand for low income families in the community. During the winter months, their focus is keeping families warm.

Their slogan, "An Open Door," says it all. G-Card offers a helping hand. During the bitter cold winter months, the county agency helps families keep their heat on. The weatherization program helps homeowners make their residences more energy efficient.

Steve Walker is the agency director. "We also have a program where we make available free materials and then teach homeowners how to use those materials to go in and do some of their own weatherizing."

G-Card also sets aside a part of its annual budget just for emergency situations. "We are able to help people get their power turned back on, get their water turned on and to help folks who have fallen behind in their rent and are facing certain eviction," Walker said.

The demand for help in Genesee County is increasing, with 25 percent of Flint's population living at, or below, the poverty level. "An important point is that most of those people go to work every day, Monday thru Friday, to try to make ends meet.," Walker told abc12's Dawn Jones.

G-Card will be a part of two warmth fundraisers-Bowling for Warmth is January 29th and Walk for Warmth, which is a statewide effort, takes place in February.

For more information contact G-Card at 810.232-2185.
