A week ago Monday, a tree fell on Gean Schafer's home on Mabel Street in Flint. It happened during those strong thunderstorms we had.

A terrified Schafer, who is blind, raced to rescue her severely disabled daughter. Luckily, neither was hurt, but Schafer had to send her daughter to stay with relatives because she was left without power.

Finally, Sunday, Flint Mayor Don Williamson stepped in, put Schafer up in a hotel, and is trying to get her power back on.

A night in a hotel was just what Schafer needed. She finally got rest, she says, thanks to the mayor, whom she's always admired.

"He was helping before," she said. "When he didn't get elected, he helped out."

Schafer's son says they called the city several times about the rotted tree over the last five years, concerned it might fall. Rotted-out trees are a worry in neighborhoods across Flint.

It's an old problem that the mayor -- who has been in office less than a year -- is determined to fix.

"We're trying to correct the mistakes that have been made, but the thing is, we are doing it; we're not just talking. We're doing it," he said.
